2024 XBRL Taxonomies Update

March 19, 2024

On March 18, 2024, the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) system was upgraded to Release 24.1 and now supports the 2024 taxonomies listed below. Each 2024 taxonomy will be compatible only with other 2024 taxonomies.

With this release, the newly added Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO) taxonomy includes the elements needed for tagging central matching service providers’ annual straight-through processing reports required by the Commission as part of the final rules on Shortening the Securities Transaction Settlement Cycle. No new versions of the Filing Fee Disclosure (FFD) taxonomy released as part of the Release 24.0.1 update on January 26, 2024, are being added as part of Release 24.1. Also, the 2024 version of the Fund (FND) taxonomy remains the same as the 2023 version of the FND taxonomy released as part of the Release 23.4 update on December 19, 2023.

The elements needed for tagging financial statements and accompanying notes to the financial statements required in the annual reports of employee stock purchase, savings and similar plans on Form 11-K, as required to be tagged as part of the final rules on Updating EDGAR Filing Requirements and Form 144 Filings, are included in the 2024 U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Financial Reporting taxonomy. The U.S. GAAP Financial Reporting taxonomy and the 2024 SEC Reporting Taxonomy reflect the same taxonomy versions that the Financial Accounting Standards Board made available on its website on December 14, 2023.

The other 2024 taxonomies listed below are the final versions of the draft taxonomies posted by Commission staff for public comment on November 10, 2023. Refer to the final 2024 taxonomies’ Release Notes for details of the changes.

  1. Closed-End Fund (CEF)
  2. Countries (COUNTRY)
  3. Currencies (CURRENCY)
  4. Document and Entity Information (DEI)
  5. Executive Compensation Disclosure (ECD)
  6. Exchange (EXCH)
  7. North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
  8. Open-End Fund (OEF)
  9. Resource Extraction Payment (RXP)
  10. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)
  11. Sub-National Jurisdiction (SNJ)
  12. State and Province (STPR)
  13. Variable Insurance Product (VIP)

The staff does not anticipate the removal of the 2022 versions of any taxonomies to occur before June 2024.

Please see https://www.sec.gov/info/edgar/edgartaxonomies.shtml for a complete listing of supported standard taxonomies.

Although EDGAR will accept either the 2024 or 2023 taxonomy versions, the staff strongly encourages companies to use the most recent version of taxonomy releases for their XBRL filings to take advantage of the most up-to-date tags related to new accounting standards and other improvements. Filers should consider transitioning to the 2024 taxonomies for the earliest reporting period that ends on or after March 18, 2024, but not for reporting periods that end before March 18, 2024. As noted above, prior versions of taxonomies other than the IFRS taxonomy are not compatible with the 2024 taxonomies.
