Kazakhstan: Total signs an agreement to acquire
a 50% interest in the concession held by OTG
Paris, March 17, 2010 - Total announces the signature of an agreement to acquire a 50% interest in Kazakhstan’s Concession held by OilTechnoGroup (OTG), the Kazakh subsidiary of Poland’s Petrolinvest. The roughly 5,500-square-kilometre onshore license presently being explored is located in northwestern Kazakhstan.
The transaction, subject to the Kazakh government approval, broadens Total’s portfolio of acreage in Kazakhstan. As operator of the license, Total will proceed with a work program that includes reprocessing of seismic data and drilling of a well. A well has already been drilled on the license, with encouraging results.
The acquisition of the stake in the concession held by OTG allows the Group to deploy its deep drilling expertise as an operator in Kazakhstan in a region with promising potential,” said Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President, Total Exploration & Production.
Total Exploration and Production in Kazakhstan
Since 1992, Total has been present in Kazakhstan with the company’s 16.8% stake in the North Caspian permit, which includes the giant Kashagan field operated by the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC). Kashagan is planned to enter into production at the end of 2012.
In Kazakhstan, as in all the countries in which it operates, the Group is committed to minimizing its environmental impact and is a fully engaged and socially responsible industrial actor. With this regard Total will bring both operational excellence and environmental performance together in the operatorship of the concession held by OTG. Indeed, all activities surrounding this project are to be positively impacted by a number of environmental, economic and societal actions to be managed in a sustainable manner.

United Kingdom: Total launches the development of
the Laggan and Tormore gas fields
Paris, 17 March 2010 - Total announces the launch of the Laggan and Tormore gas fields development in the offshore frontier region of the West of Shetland, subject to the United Kingdom Government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change approval.
Total also announces the acquisition of the 10% interest in Laggan and Tormore previously held by Chevron North Sea Limited and the 20% interest previously held by ENI UK Limited. This brings Total’s interest in this project to 80% alongside partner DONG E&P (UK) Ltd.
Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President Exploration & Production stated: “Total has demonstrated its capacity to successfully develop highly technological projects and continues to do so with the Laggan and Tormore fields, located in one of the most complex environments of the United Kingdom Continental Shelf. Bringing them to production will require near £2.5 billion investment. In taking the decision to develop this complex project, Total confirms its commitment in pursuing its investments in the North Sea and its long term objective towards helping to secure energy supplies for the United Kingdom.”
This groundbreaking subsea project and its associated infrastructure is key to unlocking further opportunities in the Greater West Shetland region, prompting an increase in exploration and development activity in the area for Total and most notably for the overall industry.
Laggan and Tormore development
The Laggan and Tormore gas fields, which lie around 140 kilometres West of Shetland by 600 metres of water depth in blocks 206/1a, 205/4b and 205/5a, have global estimated reserves of around 230 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe). At peak, gas production rate of 500 million standard cubic feet per day is expected from the two fields, plus associated condensates (for a total production of 93,000 boe per day).
Construction work on the offshore gas infrastructure, and on a new gas processing plant at Sullom Voe on Shetland, will start almost immediately, with first gas production planned for 2014.
After processing at the new Sullom Voe plant, Laggan and Tormore gas will transit through a new 230 kilometres export pipeline from Shetland into the existing Frigg UK line and onward to the Total operated Saint Fergus gas terminal, located north of Aberdeen.

Paris Court of Appeal judgment on the sinking of the Erika
Paris, 30 March, 2010 - Today, Tuesday, March 30, the Paris Court of Appeal handed down its judgment on the Erika.
On the criminal front, the decision finds that Total was imprudent in implementing its vessel vetting process and orders Total to pay a fine of €375,000.
However, on the civil aspects, the Court of Appeal decided that Total cannot be held as having deliberately taken a risk in chartering the vessel and therefore was not liable under the international conventions. As a result, Total is not liable for the civil damages awarded to the plaintiffs.
Total would like to underline that, following the lower court’s decision on January 16, 2008, as a sign of solidarity yet without admitting its liability, it paid, in full and final settlement, to the civil plaintiffs who accepted it, the amounts awarded by the Court totaling €171.5 million.
Total would also like to point out that immediately following the sinking, it has spent more than €200 million to remedy the consequences of the oil spill through clean up of hard-to-access areas of the coastline, pumping out the cargo remaining in the wreck and treatment of waste collected along the coast.
Accordingly, Total has spent over €370 million in order to compensate and repair the damages resulting from this catastrophic accident.
The Group is now taking some time to carefully review the Court of Appeal motives before considering whether or not taking the case to Cour de Cassation (French Supreme Court of Appeal).

France: Total obtains the Montelimar permit to evaluate the gas shale
potential of the area
Paris, March 31, 2010 - Total announces having obtained the Montelimar Permit in France by ministerial decree dated as of March 1st, 2010. This exploration permit, granted for a five-year period, covers a surface of 4,327 square kilometers that spans from the south of Valence to the region of Montpellier, in the south of France.
This permit, which will be operated by Total, has been jointly attributed to Total and to a subsidiary of the American group Devon. Devon having decided at the end of 2009 to focus its activities in North America, Total also announced having acquired Devon’s French affiliate. Through this transaction, which is subject to ministerial approval, Total will hold a 100% stake in the license.
Yves-Louis Darricarrère, president Exploration & Production, declared: “Total has committed to a program of work that is aimed at confirming the presence of shale gas in the region, and appraising the possibility of an economical development of these resources. Should the first geological activities be promising, exploration wells will be drilled in order to evaluate this potential.
With this new permit, and further to the acquisition of a 25% interest in Chesapeake’s permit in the Barnett Shale play in the United States at the end of 2009, Total confirms its willingness to develop its activities in non-conventional gas.
Total Exploration & Production in France
In France, Total has operated fields since 1939, notably the Lacq and Meillon gas fields located in the southwest of France, of which Total holds a 100% interest. In 2009, the Group produced 24,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
The Group’s most significant production activity in France has been on the Lacq field, which began in 1957. A pilot project to capture, inject and store carbon dioxide was inaugurated in January 2010. As part of the Group’s sustainable development policy, this project will allow the Group to assess one of the technological possibilities for reducing emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Angola: Second oil discovery on deep offshore Block 17/06
Paris, April 1, 2010 - Total announces that its subsidiary, TEPA (Block 17/06) Limited, and Sociedade Nacional de Combustíveis de Angola (Sonangol E.P.), have discovered hydrocarbons in the north-eastern area of the deep offshore block 17/06.
The Begonia-1 well is the second successful exploration well on Block 17/06, after the Gardenia-1 well. Drilled in a water depth of 453 meters, the well discovered hydrocarbons in reservoir of Miocene age and produced more than 6,000 barrels per day of high quality oil (36° API) during a production test.
Sociedade Nacional de Combustíveis de Angola (Sonangol) is the concessionaire of the Block 17/06. TEPA (Block 17/06) Limited is the operator of the Block 17/06 with a 30% stake. Total’s partners in the block are Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção S.A. (30%), Sonangol Sinopec International (SSI) Seventeen Limited (27.5%), ACREP Bloco 17 S.A. (5%), Falcon Oil Holding Angola S.A. (5%) and PARTEX Oil and Gas (Holdings) Corporation (2.5%).
Total Exploration & Production in Angola
Total is present in Angola since 1953. In Angola, Total operated 491,000 barrels oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in 2009, and its SEC* equity production amounted approximately 191,000 boe/d. This production comes essentially from Blocks 17,0 and 14.
Deep offshore Block 17, operated by Total with a 40% interest, is Total’s principal asset in Angola. It is composed of four major zones: Girassol-Rosa and Dalia, which are currently producing; Pazflor, a project under development for a production start in 2011; and CLOV (based on the Cravo, Lirio, Orquidea and Violeta discoveries), a project for which the final investment decision should be taken soon.
Total is also the operator with a 30% stake in the ultra deep offshore Block 32, on which 12 discoveries were made, confirming the oil potential of the block.
Pre-development studies for a first production zone in the central south eastern portion of the block are underway.
In addition, the Angola LNG project for the construction of a liquefaction plant near Soyo is designed to bring the country’s natural gas reserves to market. This project, on which Total holds a 13.6% stake, will be supplied by the associated gas from the fields on Blocks 0, 14, 15, 17 and 18. The project is underway with production expected to begin in 2012.

Yemen LNG Starts Second Natural Gas Liquefaction Train
Paris, April 2, 2010 - Total announces that the second train of the Yemen LNG natural gas liquefaction plant has started production. Combined with liquefied natural gas (LNG) production from the first train, commissioned on October 15, 2009, it will enable the Yemen LNG plant to reach its full capacity.
Facts and figures about the Yemen LNG project:
  A $4.5 billion investment, the biggest ever made in Yemen.

  A 320-kilometre gas pipeline carries feed gas from Block 18 in central Yemen’s Marib region to the Balhaf liquefaction plant on the country’s southern coast.

  With the startup of the second train, total production capacity reaches 6.7 million tons of LNG per year, equal to a hundred cargos to be delivered each year over 25 years. Since the start-up of the first train, 18 cargos have already been delivered to South Korea, the United States, China, Spain and Mexico.
“The commissioning of the second Yemen LNG train ahead of schedule represents another major step in the history of our partnership in Yemen, where we have been present for over twenty years” said Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President of Total Exploration & Production. “I would like to thank our project teams for their commitment, hard work and constant attention to industrial safety. Thanks to them, the first liquefaction train had reached its plateau production very quickly. This start-up will cement Total’s position as a top-tier global LNG producer.”
Total is the main shareholder in Yemen LNG, with an interest of 39.62%, alongside state-owned Yemen Gas Company (16.73%), Hunt Oil Company (17.22%), SK Energy (9.55%), Korea Gas Corporation (6%), Hyundai Corporation (5.88%) and Yemen’s General Authority for Social Security and Pensions (GASSP, 5%).
The people behind the project
Yemen LNG supports the local economy by creating jobs for locals — as many as several thousand during the construction phase — and by deploying a major sustainable development program covering water, public health, education, fishing and agriculture.
Total and its partners have recruited and trained Yemen LNG’s technical and administrative team representing 700 people. Local employees have acquired, through a three-year dedicated training program in both Sanaa and Balhaf, the necessary skills for the conduct of the operations. In the future, Yemenis will make

Oil for Food
Clarification: Not a new case
Paris, April 6, 2010 - The Group confirms that it published its 2009 Annual Report, specifying that Total S.A. was placed under formal investigation on February 22, 2010 as part of a wider investigation in Paris being conducted into the Oil for Food program.
Contrary to what has been claimed this morning in a French daily newspaper, this is not a new case.
This formal investigation comes eight years after the initial investigation began and three years after it closed, with no new elements having been uncovered. The public prosecutor has already stated that earlier allegations against Total executives in this matter were unfounded and, in September 2009, asked that the case be dismissed.
Nonetheless, Total S.A. is now being accused of bribery, complicity and benefiting from influence peddling by a new investigating judge in charge of this case since the end of 2009.
This judge claims that Total knowingly purchased oil that Iraq had allegedly allocated to prominent French individuals in exchange for influence with the French government.
The judge also contends that Total bribed Iraqi public officials in order to purchase oil in violation of the embargo.
There is nothing to support these allegations.
The Volcker Report, issued by the independent inquiry committee into the United Nations Oil for Food program, found that no corruption had occurred.
We are confident about the investigation’s outcome and that Total will be cleared of these allegations.
The Group reiterates that it has never, by any means, been sued for compensation by the proceedings entered into by Iraq against the numerous companies concerned by the Oil for Food program.
However complex the situation in our host countries, The Group operates in compliance with applicable legislation and with its Code of Conduct.

Angola: two new oil discoveries on deep offshore Block 15/06
Paris, April 7, 2010 - Total announces that its subsidiary, TEPA (Block 15/06), Limited, and its partners have made two important oil discoveries in Angola at the Nzanza-1 and Cinguvu-1 wells, in the deep waters of the Angolan offshore.
Nzanza-1 and Cinguvu-1 wells, located in Block 15/06 some 350 kilometres North-West of Luanda, were drilled in a water depth of 1,400 metres. They reached a total depth of respectively 3,008 metres and 3,023 metres. Both wells encountered oil pay in sands of Lower Miocene age with good reservoir characteristics.
During production tests, Nzanza-1 well produced an 18° API oil at rates above 1,600 barrels per day (b/d). An analysis of the results indicates a potential for future production wells in excess of 5,000 b/d per well, when associated to artificial lift. At the Cinguvu-1 well, the production test, limited by surface facilities, reached a flow of 6,400 b/d of a 23° API oil.
After the Sangos-1 and N’Goma-1 discoveries in 2008 and Cabaça Norte-1 in 2009, these new discoveries confirm the potential of Block 15/06 in Angola.
TEPA (Block 15/06), Limited, holds a 15% interest in the Block 15/06, operated by Eni.
Block 15/06 development hubs
These two recent discoveries, together with the former ones at Ngoma-1 and Sangos-1, all located in the nortwestern part of the permit, are being evaluated in view of the proceeding with a first development hub in Block 15/06.
Total Exploration & Production in Angola
Total is present in Angola since 1953. In Angola, Total operated 491,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in 2009, and its SEC* equity production amounted to 191,000 boe/d. This equity production comes essentially from blocks 17, 0 and 14.
Deep offshore Block 17, operated by Total with a 40% interest, is Total’s principal asset in Angola. It is composed of four major zones: Girassol-Rosa and Dalia, which are currently producing; Pazflor, a project under construction for a production start in 2011; and CLOV (based on the Cravo, Lirio, Orquidea and Violeta discoveries), a project for which the final investment decision should be taken soon.

Gulf of Mexico: Total transfers its interests in Virgo and Matterhorn to
W&T Offshore, Inc.
Paris, April 8, 2010 - Total E&P USA, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Total S.A., announces the transfer of its interests in three federal offshore lease blocks in the Gulf of Mexico to W&T Offshore, Inc., effective January 1, 2010. Under the terms of the agreement, W&T Offshore, Inc. will receive Total’s 64% interest in Viosca Knoll Blocks 822 and 823 (Virgo) and 100% interest in Mississippi Canyon Block 243 (Matterhorn).
Virgo gas field was discovered in 1997 and started producing in 1999. Located in the continental shelf in a water depth of 345 meters, Virgo reached an average production of approximately 2,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) at year-end 2009.
The Matterhorn oil and gas field was discovered in 1999 in a water depth of 850 metres. Production started in 2003 and reached an average production of about 5,000 (boe/d) at year-end 2009.
In selling these non-strategic assets, Total finalises the reorganisation of its activities in the Gulf of Mexico, focusing on areas of growth in the deep offshore.
Total Exploration and Production in the Gulf of Mexico
At year-end 2009, the Group’s production in the Gulf of Mexico amounted to approximately 30,000 boe/d, with the majority produced by Tahiti.
In May 2009, the Tahiti deepwater field, operated by Chevron and in which Total holds a 17% interest, started producing. Tahiti is one of the largest fields in the Gulf of Mexico and has rapidly reached the plateau daily production of approximately
125,000 barrels of crude oil and 70 million cubic feet of natural gas.
Furthermore, the Group is committed to developing the first phase of the Chinook project, operated by Petrobras and in which Total holds a 33.33% interest, with a production test scheduled for July 2010.
Finally, Total entered into an alliance with Cobalt International in the spring of 2009 for the joint exploration of 214 deep offshore blocks in the Gulf of Mexico.

Total Joins the Positive Energy Consortium
Paris, April 12, 2010 - Total today announces that it has joined the Positive Energy Consortium.
Created in October 2008, the consortium brings together businesses - each an acknowledged expert in its field - working on the challenges related to the buildings of the future. Its aim is to reduce energy use in future office buildings, increase their capacity to produce energy from renewable sources, and optimize the carbon footprint of buildings over their life cycle.
Total will lead the working group on integrating photovoltaics in office buildings. Photovoltaics technology can be used with other solutions to create positive energy buildings, which produce more energy than they use.
“In adherence to the Positive Energy Consortium, we would like to bring our know-how in the field of photovoltaics and share our expertise with the other consortium members and specialists,” commented Philippe Boisseau, President, Total Gas & Power. “Our objective is to actively contribute to projects that allow us to more effectively manage fast-growing energy demand while reducing greenhouses gas emissions.”
Total and Solar Energy
Total has been active in solar energy since 1983 through its interests in two companies, Photovoltech and Tenesol. Photovoltech, in which Total holds a 50% interest alongside GDF SUEZ, produces photovoltaic cells based on a crystalline silicon technology. Tenesol, in which Total holds a 50% stake alongside EDF, specializes in designing, manufacturing, marketing and operating photovoltaic solar energy systems.
In December 2008, Total became the biggest shareholder in U.S. startup Konarka, which develops products based on organic solar technologies. Total’s stake is now nearly 25%.
Total is also conducting significant R&D through partnerships with world-class laboratories in France, such as the Laboratoire de Physique des Interfaces et des Couches Minces (LPICM - Interface and Thin Film Physics Laboratory) at the Ecole Polytechnique engineering school and the Toulouse-based Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems (LAAS), as well as in the United States, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany.

French national roundtable on the refining industry
Paris, April 15, 2010 - Total participated in the national roundtable on the refining industry, sponsored by the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and the Sea, on April 15, 2010.
The Group reiterated its strategy, objectives and commitments to overcome the structural challenges affecting the refining industry in Europe and in France in particular. It will:
    continue to adjust its refining base in response to shrinking demand in Europe and France (gasoline/diesel fuel imbalance);

    address the impact of the restructuring of its activities in affected regions;

    keep refineries open in metropolitan France during the next five years;

    comply with European Union regulations, especially those concerning the environment;

    implement a significant capital expenditure program in Europe for one billion euros per year, half of which will be allocated to France.
In addition, the Group stressed that the long-term viability of the industry depends not only on a necessary reduction in refining capacity, but also on restoring its competitiveness. In order to achieve this, it would be appropriate to:
    correct the tax distortions that are the cause of the gasoline/diesel fuel imbalance we are struggling with;

    resist the more stringent requirements on biofuel blending;

    apply realistic European Union directives;

    encourage development of logistics and port infrastructure according to industry needs.
As a responsible corporation, Total is committed to maintaining an efficient, modern, cost-competitive and environmentally-friendly refining base in France. It will participate actively with the other stakeholders in the working groups* set up by the government to jointly analyze and understand the situation. Christophe de Margerie, Chief Executive Officer of Total, expressed his “satisfaction at how the roundtable was conducted, which enabled all parties to express their views, a necessary prerequisite for continued dialogue.”

*   Three working groups have been set up: one to study the factors influencing refining industry competitiveness, one to examine ways to balance supply and demand, and one to identify future issues related to R&D, training and longer-term developments in the refining industry.
