I oppose the creation of Natural Asset Companies that will be used to sell off American land, biological and ecological sources, and atmosphere. I do not want our country’s public lands, waters and even air sold to commercialized entities obliged to preclude the economic use of such resources to the betterment of our society and the strengthening of our economy. I also reject the imposition of unconstitutional restrictions via such means on individual Americans’ property rights and other freedoms. The establishment of these companies and the creation of a new asset class by the Securities and Exchange Commission is extraordinarily problematic for many reasons, including the following: [1] The creation of an asset class premised on a negation of productive output fundamentally contravenes our economic system, which is based on the production of goods and services. This means that value and pricing are imposed externally and arbitrarily, rather than being determined by supply and demand market conditions. [2] The negation of resource use prioritizes biological and land systems over the flourishing and physical betterment of the people of the country. Because the lands are precluded from resource utilization, such resources become unavailable for traditional assets referenced to goods and services. The middle classes and poor will become further impoverished. [3] Arbitrary valuation of these ‘resources’ trends increasingly upward, with current valuations exceeding USA GDP many times over (please see SEC application proposal). When placed in competition with the traditional economy they will prove not merely disruptive but destroy it. [4] Valuation of these resources will no longer be determined by market conditions but by government fiat, which is wholly unsuited to such determinations and arbitrary. [5] The classification of which resources constitute assets is problematic in that ‘nature’ is itself undergoing continual change, scientific modeling is uncertain and in many instances greatly contended, and frequently non-localizable (air and animal populations are extremely mobile far ranging) [6] Making available our land, biological resources, and atmosphere to foreign entities (e.g., China and Russia) mean that foreign entities will dictate the well being of American citizens [7] Preservation of natural resources can be better achieved through government policy rather than economic instruments.
