June 13, 2022 CDP is a not-for-profit charity that runs the global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts. In a July 10, 2017 article, CDP discussed the fact that \"just 100 companies are source of over 70% of emissions.\" It is no secret that the United States economy is founded upon a staunch belief in a capitalist system. While this system has the country industrialize and economize nearly every single aspect of day to day life, leading to great wealth and prosperity, it is equally as clear that this wealth and prosperity has not be divided amongst the greater United States populace proportionally. Corporations have traditionally been the economic powerhouses, producing and selling much of the goods that the everyday populace uses. In a similar vein to that of the growing wealth disparity in the United States is the growing disparity in exposure to environmental issues that one may face. Even more harrowing is that the zip c ode one is born into, and thus one's socioeconomic status, drastically changes adverse environmental effects that they may face in their formative younger years and harder older years. In a 1992 article by Paul Mohai and Bunyan Bryant for the University of Colorado Law Review, this issue is explored in depth. It has been the case since America's industrialization and it will continue to persist: the nation's poorest hold the burden of the adverse environmental effects that are championed by our capitalist system's emphasis on wastefulness. This is all to say that holding corporations accountable for any and all of their actions in the future is critical to preserving an ever-so volatile socioeconomic and environmental systems in this country. The SEC has an incredible opportunity to take a critical step in the fight for eco-activism by holding corporations accountable for the environmental shortcomings that is so common among each and every one of them.
