Secretary, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Vanessa Countryman,
Corporations asked for more power, claiming that they could do a better job than government in environmental and social factors. They talked a good talk, claiming to care about people and planet. But in reality all they care about is profit. And by failing to regulate when it comes to factors affecting the people and planet, the government is telling them this is perfectly fine - that all that matters is profit. At any cost. Which of course is not really profit in the long term, but who cares, as long as the politicians get their campaign contributions from these corporations. Because it seems that’s all that matters to government today.
Bottom line, if you as government choose to allow corporations so much power in today’s world, you MUST regulate them. Because it’s becoming increasingly clear they are not going to regulate themselves.
SEC, in many cases you are the last line of defense for people and planet. We beg you to do your job and protect us from the damage caused by corporations who don’t tell us the whole story, who try to hide their actions and what they are really about. Require them to reveal the real cost of their “profits”. They are spending our collective birthright with impunity, and now they are seeking to hide the theft. Do not allow it. We the people have placed our faith and trust in you to protect us.
