CHANGE IN BOARD MEMBERSHIP

HOUSTON—JULY 2, 2003—STEWART & STEVENSON SERVICES, INC. (NYSE: SVC), a leading manufacturer, distributor and provider of service for industrial and energy related equipment, and a manufacturer of medium tactical vehicles for the U.S. Army, announced that C. Jim Stewart, III has resigned from the board of directors.

Max L. Lukens, chairman of the board, stated, "Jimmy contributed in many aspects of the business. Our Board and senior management appreciate his valuable input during his tenure as a member of the Board."
