Reports Record May Sales of $97.6 Million, an Increase of 12.2%
Comparable Store Sales Rise 1.1% for the American Eagle Brand

Warrendale, PA, June 4, 2003 - American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (NASDAQ: AEOS) today announced that total sales for the four-week period ended May 31, 2003 increased 12.2% to $97.6 million, compared to $87.0 million for the four-week period ended June 1, 2002. Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores increased 1.1% for the May period. Consolidated comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, increased 0.4% for the month of May.

Total sales for the period include $5.5 million from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $5.4 million for the corresponding period last year. Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 9.4% in May.

Total sales for the seventeen-week period ended May 31, 2003 increased 6.7% to $389.5 million, compared to $364.9 million for the seventeen-week period ended June 1, 2002. Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined 4.2% for the seventeen-week period. Consolidated comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 4.9% for the period compared to the corresponding period ended June 1, 2002.

Total sales for the seventeen-week period include $21.3 million from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $22.9 million for the corresponding period last year. Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 13.8% for the period compared to the corresponding period last year.

Regarding second quarter earnings, the Company is comfortable with the current First Call consensus estimate of $0.09 per share.
