DEARBORN BANCORP REPORTS FOURTH QUARTER EARNINGS
DEARBORN, Michigan, January 19, 2010 ... Dearborn Bancorp, Inc. (Nasdaq: DEAR), the Holding Company for Fidelity Bank, today reported net income of $4,194,000 or $0.55 per fully diluted common share for the three months ended December 31, 2009 compared to a net loss of $29,407,000 or $(3.77) per share for the three months ended December 31, 2008. For the year ended December 31, 2009, the Company had a net loss of $51,175,000 or $(6.69) per share compared to a net loss of $31,925,000 or $(3.99) per share for the same period in 2008. Fourth quarter earnings were sufficient to return the Bank to an “adequately capitalized” category under regulatory guidelines for risk based capital. On December 31, 2009, the common stock of the Company had a tangible book value of $6.79 compared to a $0.46 closing price.
On November 6, 2009, President Obama signed into law H.R. 3548: Worker, Home Ownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009. This legislation has extended the Net Operating Loss (NOL) carryback period for federal income tax from two years to five years for either 2008 or 2009 NOLs. As a result of this legislation, the Company recorded a $5,451,000 one time federal income tax benefit during the fourth quarter of 2009.
At December 31, 2009, the Company’s total assets were $996,486,000, representing a decline of 11.1 percent over the preceding 12 months. Total deposits decreased 7.5 percent over the previous year and stood at $867,955,000 when the fourth quarter ended. Total loans were $833,136,000 on December 31, 2009, 10.7 percent less than they had been on the same date in 2008. Strong emphasis is being placed on collection and maintenance of the existing loan portfolio and new lending has been curtailed. The balance sheet has continued to right-size throughout the year to conserve capital.
Michael J. Ross, President and Chief Executive Officer of both the Company and the Bank, announced the financial results and commented, “During the fourth quarter, charge-offs were $5.6 million, primarily due to the declines in the value of collateral securing previously classified loans. Our provision for loan losses was $2.3 million for the fourth quarter and our allowance for loan losses now stands at $25.1 million, or 3.02% of loans. The carrying value of other real estate owned was written down by $267,000 and defaulted loan expense including taxes, insurance, maintenance and legal was $1.1 million during the quarter.”
Ross continued, “Dearborn Bancorp, Inc. has pursued a scrubbing of its balance sheet over the last year. As of December 31, 2009 all Goodwill and all Intangible Assets have been written off. A valuation allowance has been placed on the entire Deferred Tax Asset balance. Charge-offs of $30.2 million have been recorded in 2009 to recognize the decrease in current value of collateral related to classified loans. Our primary concerns for 2010 include the Michigan economy, credit quality, and the stability or improvement of the underlying collateral values in the loan portfolio.”
