Valassis Says ADVO Counter-suit Contains No New Information

Expects Merger to be Rescinded

Livonia, Mich., Sept. 11, 2006: Valassis Communications, Inc. (NYSE: VCI), which filed suit on Aug. 30, 2006, against ADVO, Inc. (NYSE: AD), seeking to rescind a $1.3 billion merger agreement between the two companies, today issued the following statement regarding a response and counter-claim filed by ADVO Friday:

"ADVO's sealed counter-suit was expected and contains no new information. When the facts are reviewed in a court of law we fully expect the merger agreement to be rescinded, based on fraud and material adverse change and we will continue to press our claims to recover damages in conjunction with this transaction."
