The Prix Gilles Kahn Awarded to Liao Zewen,
with the Support of Total
Paris, March 30, 2009 Awarded by the French-Chinese Foundation for Sciences and Their Applications (FFCSA), the Prix Gilles Kahn was today conferred on Liao Zewen, Assistant Professor with the Geochemistry Institute’s Organic Geochemistry Laboratory, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Guangzhou.
The FFCSA sponsored a post-doctoral fellowship, supervised by Dr. Alain Graciaa, for Liao Zewen in 2002 at the Complex Fluids Laboratory at Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour in France. His preliminary results were so promising that his fellowship was extended a further year, jointly funded by Total and the Regional Council of the Pyrénées Atlantiques region. Liao Zewen’s research primarily focused on adsorption and occlusion phenomena in asphaltene*. His work has improved understanding of how hydrocarbons form in reservoirs and also produced an innovative new fluid analysis method used in organic geochemistry.
The award ceremony, held in Paris at the Institut de France, was attended by Jean Salençon, President of the French Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Li Ding, Director-General of the Bureau of Basic Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Co-Chair of the FFCSA Science Board. Dr Li commented that: “This program, of significance, demonstrates the positive achievement from the scientific cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and French research units. The Prix Gilles Kahn reflects this.”
“Liao Zewen was selected from among nine candidates by a jury of French and Chinese experts,” explained Jacques Caen, Co-Chair of the FFCSA and member of the French Academy of Sciences. “He has been award 2009 Prix Gilles Kahn not only for his outstanding research during his post-doctoral fellowship in France, but also for the active, successful Chinese-French collaboration that has continued since.”
The FFSCA was established under the aegis of the French Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Total is a partner Every year, the FFCSA helps to select Chinese post-doctoral students to conduct research in France on topics suggested by a number of companies, including Total.

“Beginning in 2007 for a four-year period, Total is financing the Prix Gilles Kahn, intended to recognize outstanding post-doctoral fellows selected by the FFCSA from all areas of science,” said Jean-François Minster, Total’s Senior Vice President of Scientific Development. “In this way, we hope to promote French-Chinese exchanges and foster tangible cooperation.”
The award was established in honor of the late Dr. Gilles Kahn, former Co-Chairman of the FFCSA’s Science Board and a renowned mathematician and computer science specialist. Its objectives are to showcase research and innovation programs involving France and China, by honoring a former FFCSA fellow each year. It is awarded to students whose research topics vary significantly from year to year. In 2007, He Hongping won the award for his research on laminar silicate grafting and molecular modeling, while the previous year’s winner, Liu Haitao, conducted research on optical transmission.

Canada: Total sells a 10% Interest in Canada’s
Northern Lights project to Sinopec
Paris, April 1, 2009 — Total E&P Canada Ltd. (“Total Canada”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Total S.A., announces that it has sold a 10% interest in the Northern Lights Partnership (NLP) to SinoCanada Petroleum Corporation (“SinoCanada”), a subsidiary of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec).
As a consequence of the transaction announced today, NLP will be owned by Total Canada and SinoCanada, with 50% each. SinoCanada acquired in May 2005 a 40% interest in NLP from Synenco Energy Inc.. Total Canada acquired the remaining 60% interest when it purchased Synenco Energy Inc. in 2008.
The Northern Lights Oil Sands Project is located approximately 100 kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Total is studying the development scheme of the NLP that will be developed through mining techniques, benefitting from the experience of the other developments that the Group is involved with in the area. Total is strongly committed to this project, which is in line with the Group’s strategy of developing non-traditional oil fields to provide important long term production capacities.
“Total is pleased to expand its cooperation with Sinopec. This change to the Northern Lights Partnership will be an opportunity to engage in closer efforts with Sinopec to develop the oil sands resources that will be necessary to help fulfill energy needs for the next decades, and to establish access to markets in North America and Asia", said Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President, Total Exploration & Production.
Total Exploration and Production in Canada
Total is the operator of the Joslyn Lease with a 74% interest, located 65 kilometres northwest of Fort McMurray. The lease will be developed using surface mining technologies. The production potential of the Joslyn lease is currently estimated at more than 200,000 barrels per day.
Total also holds a 50% interest in the Surmont lease, located about 60 kilometers southeast of Fort McMurray, which is being developed using Stream Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology. Phase 1, which started end 2007, is currently producing 18,000 barrels per day. It will be followed by Phase 2 which will bring the

Total and Cobalt to jointly explore the deepwater Gulf of Mexico
Paris, April 6, 2009. Total announces that its subsidiary, TOTAL E&P USA, INC. (“Total”), has entered into several agreements with Cobalt International Energy, L.P. (“Cobalt”) to jointly explore the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. These agreements will form the basis of a strategic alliance in this area that offers numerous promising exploration opportunities.
The alliance will bring together Cobalt’s proven expertise in the Gulf of Mexico, along with Total’s worldwide experience in deep offshore exploration and development.
“Total is pleased to team up with Cobalt to pursue and further its commitment to exploring the deepwater Gulf of Mexico in the coming years", stated Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President Exploration and Production. “Both companies have complementary competencies to successfully explore and develop their combined portfolio.”
Under the terms of these agreements, subject to the approval of the United States’ Mineral Management Service and other customary conditions to closing, the exploration portfolios of both companies in the Gulf of Mexico, 122 exploration leases on Cobalt’s side, 80 exploration leases on Total’s side, and 12 exploration leases already jointly owned, will generally be shared on the basis of 60% for Cobalt and 40% for Total. This will provide both companies with access to large areas of contiguous acreage, mainly sub-salt, similar to major discoveries in this area (Miocene, Paleogene).
Total and Cobalt are committed to starting in 2009 an initial program of several exploratory wells to be drilled on promising prospects already identified. Cobalt will operate the exploration phase in the joint program with Total providing the rig and seconding geoscientists in Cobalt’s teams.
Total Exploration and Production in the United States
Total has been active in Exploration and Production in the United States since 1957.
In the Gulf of Mexico where Total focuses on the deepwater, Total is currently participating in two major development projects: Total holds an equity share of 17% in the Tahiti project (start-up in mid-2009) and also owns 33% of the Chinook project (start-up mid-2010). Total also operates two producing deep shelf fields, Matterhorn and Virgo.

Total is present in other areas of the United States. The Group has acquired a 30% working interest from Chevron in several onshore exploration blocks in the White Hills area, Alaska, on which an exploration program is currently underway. Additionally, Total has a portfolio of exploration blocks in the Beaufort Sea, offshore Alaska.
Recently, Total acquired a 50% stake in IDT Corporation’s American Shale Oil, LCC (AMSO) subsidiary, to jointly develop a research and demonstration program to produce and commercialize oil shales on AMSO’s federal leasehold in western Colorado.

Total Creates €50 Million Community Development Fund for
Young People to Promote Access to Employment and
Tackle Social Exclusion in France
Paris, April 27, 2009 — Total today decides to create a community development fund to help young people. The total endowment will be €50 million, starting with a donation of €25 million that will be increased by €5 million a year over five years.
Total will be signing an initial agreement with France’s High Commission for Action to Alleviate Poverty in the coming weeks. The agreement will cover funding of driver education for 10,000 young people in apprenticeships; keeping students in school by supporting them and their families through a “helping hand” program under a partnership with Association pour Favoriser l’Egalité des Chances à l’Ecole (APFEE); and helping young entrepreneurs to start up their own businesses, as part of the CréaJeunes program run by Association pour le Droit à l’Initiative Economique (ADIE).
Already partnered with these two associations, Total currently spends more than €2 million a year to tackle social exclusion in France. The fund created today will expand already effective projects and represents a change in scale, to support new projects launched by the ministries concerned.
Total’s Community Development Initiatives in France
In France, the Group’s community development initiatives chiefly focus on equal education and employment opportunity and children’s aid. Total regularly partners with around 20 associations and foundations, which include APFEE, Institut Télémaque, Institut d’Etudes Politiques and its high school outreach program, Association pour le Droit à l’Activité Economique (ADIE), Nos Quartiers Ont des Talents and La Chaîne de l’Espoir.
In addition, Total’s employees extend this commitment through volunteer work and mentoring, supported by the Total Foundation.

Total and Its Employees Gear Up to Observe
the World Day for Safety at Work
Paris, April 27, 2009 — The seventh World Day for Safety at Work will be observed in a broad array of activities worldwide on April 28. Total is taking this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to safety and its ambitious objectives for management and employee involvement.
On that day, all of Total’s subsidiaries in more than 130 countries around the globe will be holding special safety-themed activities.
The objective is to further strengthen the Group’s safety culture by going beyond routine day-to-day safety-related actions and creating a special event where everyone can share their views and best practices.
Total’s top priorities are personal health and safe operations. Because there is no such thing as zero risk at a company as big as Total, with such a wide range of activities, the emphasis is on ensuring that efforts to meet this commitment never slacken.
Total’s safety performance has improved significantly in recent years. The number of accidents with and without lost time has been reduced by 66% over five years, ranking the Group among the best in class worldwide.

Expiry and Termination of Offer to Acquire UTS Energy Corporation
Paris, April 28, 2009 — Total announced today that its offer to acquire all of the outstanding common shares of UTS Energy Corporation (“UTS”) for C$1.75 cash per share (the “Offer”) through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Total E&P Canada Ltd. (“Total Canada”), expired at 8:00 p.m. (Toronto time) on April 27, 2009.
At the time of expiry, the condition that there shall be at least 662/3% of the common shares (calculated on a fully-diluted basis) validly deposited under the Offer and not properly withdrawn at the expiry time (the “Minimum Condition”) had not been met. The Offer is therefore terminated. Total Canada has instructed Kingsdale Shareholder Services Inc., the depositary for the Offer, to promptly return all deposited Common Shares in accordance with the Offer.
“While we believed that our Offer represented certainty and fair value for UTS shareholders, we acknowledge their decision,” said Michael Borrell, President & C.E.O of Total Canada. “Total Canada remains committed to its current activities and investments in Canada and will continue to implement its willing strategy in the oil sands”.
Total Exploration & Production in Canada
Total is the operator of the Joslyn project with a 74% interest. The project will be developed using surface mining technologies. The production potential of the project is currently estimated at more than 200,000 barrels per day.
Total also holds a 50% interest in the Surmont lease, located about 60 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray. Phase One, which started in 2007, has a capacity of 27,000 barrels per day at plateau production and is currently producing 18,000 barrels per day. It will be followed by Phase Two which will bring total production to approximately 110,000 barrels per day. Future phases at Surmont are also under study.
In 2008, Total acquired Synenco Energy which held an interest in the Northern Lights project, and now holds 50% of the project.
