Republic of Congo: Positive Appraisal on the Moho-Bilondo License
Paris, November 28 — Total announces today positive appraisal results for the Moho Nord Marine-3 well, lying around 80 kilometres offshore of the Republic of Congo in 1,030 metres of water in the northern part of the Moho-Bilondo license. The discovery follows on from the Moho Nord Marine-1 and 2 finds in 2007.
Moho Marine Nord-3 was drilled to a total depth of 2,300 meters, 1.7 kilometers northwest of Moho Nord Marine-2 and 2.7 kilometres north of Moho Nord Marine-1. The well encountered a 60-metre column of good quality sands, containing 18°API oil in the Upper Miocene and flowed at 3,000 barrels per day through a choke.
This discovery confirms the Tertiary Miocene resource cluster in the northern part of the Moho-Bilondo license. The well will make it possible to further refine the development plan for Moho Nord.
Phase 1 development of the southern part of Moho-Bilondo is under way, comprising fourteen subsea wells tied back to a Floating Production Unit (FPU). Phase 1 came on stream in April 2008, and should progressively ramp up to a plateau production of 90,000 barrels per day. Output is exported to the Djéno terminal.
Total E&P Congo holds a 53.5% interest in the license, alongside Chevron Overseas Congo Ltd. (31.5%) and Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo (15%).
Total in the Congo and West Africa
Present in the Republic of Congo since 1968, Total has a solid position as the country’s leading oil producer, with operated production capacity of 130,000 barrels of oil per day.
Total has the requisite technological know-how and capabilities to successfully implement complex large projects in frontier environments. In addition to potential Phase 2 development of the northern reservoirs in the Moho-Bilondo license, Total has made five discoveries in nearly 2,000 metres of water in the Congo’s ultra-deep offshore Mer Très Profonde Sud license.

The start-up of Moho-Bilondo in April 2008 was a further success for Total’s growth strategy in West Africa’s deep offshore. It followed the production start-ups of Dalia and Rosa in Angola in late 2006 and 2007 respectively and the recent launch of both Pazflor, the third development pole in Angola’s Block 17, and Usan in Nigeria. The next milestone will be the start up of Akpo in Nigeria, planned for 2009. Total’s West African production was nearly 640,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2007.

UK North Sea: Total Awarded Three Exploration Licenses
Paris December 5, 2008 — Total announces today that it has been awarded three exploration licences in the 25th Oil and Gas Licensing Round of the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change.
In the West of Shetlands area, Total and its partners in the Laggan and Tormore gas condensate discoveries, have been awarded part of the adjacent Block 205/4.
Further north, Total will have a 56% interest in the exploration licence formed by Blocks 214/17, 214/21b and 214/22.
In addition, in the Central Graben area of the North Sea, Total will have a 75% equity in Block 29/3b where it has a firm well commitment to drill the high temperature-high pressure Corfe Prospect.
The award of these three licences is in line with Total’s strategy of acquiring new acreage around its two main UK North Sea production hubs (Elgin-Franklin and Alwyn) and developing its position in the West of Shetlands area around its Laggan and Tormore discoveries. Total hence reaffirms its commitment to actively pursuing exploration, and contributing to the development of the North Sea’s oil and gas resources.
Total Exploration and Production in the United Kingdom
Total is one of the leading oil and gas producers on the UK Continental Shelf, with equity production of more than 260,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2007. It continues to invest heavily in and remains committed to the UK North Sea, where it recently brought on stream the Jura field. Based in Aberdeen, Scotland, the company owns and operates a cluster of fields in the Alwyn Area of the northern North Sea, the Elgin and Franklin fields in the Central North Sea and the Otter field northeast of Shetland. The Company also operates the St. Fergus gas terminal and a gas transportation system, and has interests in a number of non-operated fields. Total also has interests in the West of Shetland area where it is finalizing the development studies of the Laggan and Tormore gas discoveries.

Solar Energy : Total leading Shareholder in U.S. Startup Konarka
Paris, December 15, 2008 — Total announces that it is now a core shareholder in U.S. startup Konarka, specialized in organic photovoltaic technology after Total Gas & Power USA (SAS) recently underwrote a share issue becoming first shareholder with a significant interest in the company. The stake will be slightly less than 20%.
Co-founded in 2001 by Howard Berke and Alan Heeger, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry for his work on conductive polymers, Konarka is a U.S. startup actively developing third-generation organic solar energy technology.
Following the transaction, Philippe Boisseau, President, Total Gas & Power, stated: “This investment positions Total strategically to secure the future of solar energy, while expanding its technological portfolio.”
This investment is consistent with Total’s growth strategy in the photovoltaic segment. Already present in solar energy through its interest in Photovoltech and Tenesol, Total intends to step up its crystalline silicon-based cell production. At the same time, it aims to grow in the thin film segment; which Konarka will help it do.
Total brings its expertise applied to carbon chemistry through the Group’s chemical subsidiaries (Atotech, Bostik, Hutchinson, Sartomer and Total Petrochemicals USA INC) that have signed bilateral R&D and cooperation agreements with Konarka.
Total and Solar Energy
Total has been active in solar energy since 1983 through its interests in two companies. Photovoltech, in which Total holds a 47.8% interest alongside GDF SUEZ and IMEC, produces photovoltaic cells based on a crystalline silicon technology. Tenesol, in which Total holds a 50% stake alongside EDF, specializes in designing, manufacturing, marketing and operating photovoltaic solar energy systems.
In late 2007, Total acquired a 25% interest in Swiss-based Novacis, which conducts thin film photovoltaic cell R&D.
About Konarka Technologies, Inc.
Konarka develops and manufactures solar plastic films that convert light to energy—anywhere. As the leading developer of polymer-based, organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology that provides a source of renewable power in a variety of form factors,

Paris, December 18, 2008 — The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and Total, a leading oil and gas company, have announced a new energy research collaboration that will support MIT’s Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change to further understand and mitigate global climate change.
As a MITEI Sustaining Member, Total will also support several research projects in subsurface imaging to reduce exploration and production costs and reduce environmental surface and sub-surface impacts for oil and gas development. This portfolio of technologies has direct application to heavy oil production, a critical oil resource especially in the Western Hemisphere where reserves in Canada and Venezuela alone are roughly double those of Saudi Arabia’s conventional oil reserves. Subsurface imaging technologies also have broad application beyond oil and gas and could enhance geothermal energy production, carbon sequestration, and, potentially, nuclear waste disposal. Sponsoring of research projects in the field of renewable energies is also under consideration.
“We are excited to have Total as a member of the Initiative,” said Professor Ernest Moniz, Director of MITEI. “The relationship between Total and MIT has been growing over several years and we are delighted to welcome them to the full range of MITEI activities. The research supported by Total at the Institute will address both sustainability and enhanced exploration and production for conventional energy sources with minimized impacts on the environment.”
As a MITEI Sustaining Member, Total will have a seat on the MITEI governing board. The board provides key input on the direction and success of the Initiative’s research portfolio.
Jean-François Minster, Senior Vice President for Scientific Development at Total, said, “Research and development is a key component in Total’s growth strategy and evolution. This strategy involves partnering with leading universities in energy science and technology. The MIT Energy Initiative is, in this framework, a unique endeavor that enabled us to define with MIT researchers a program that not only fits with our midterm strategy but also provides an excellent gateway to longer term evolutions and innovations. This R&D collaboration extends a multi-year mutually fruitful relationship between Total and MIT, which includes scholarships in favor of students specializing in energy or African MIT

undergraduates and an annual education event for Total senior managers organized by Suzanne Berger of MIT and Total Corporate University.” In addition to supporting Total’s flagship research program, this five-year, $5 million collaboration will include Total’s sponsorship of three named energy graduate fellowships — the “Total-MIT Energy Fellows” — in the first year of the collaboration and two each year in the subsequent four years of the collaboration. These fellows are members of the inaugural class of MITEI’s “Society of Energy Fellows,” a formal organization within MITEI designed to promote a community of energy specialists during their years at the Institute, as well as in their post-graduate careers.

Nigeria : Oil discovery on the Etisong Field, Offshore OML 102
Paris, December 23, 2008 — Total announces today that its Nigerian subsidiary, Total E & P Nigeria Ltd. (TEPNG), has encountered hydrocarbons in the area within the south-eastern corner of Oil Mining License (OML) 102, offshore south-eastern Nigeria, about 15 kilometres from the Ofon Field, in a water depth of seventy metres.
OML 102 is run by the joint venture Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/Total, operated by TEPNG in which Total holds a 40% interest and NNPC 60%.
The Etisong-1 well was drilled to a total depth of 2,207 metres and produced from turbiditic reservoirs over 6,000 barrels per day of oil with an API of 40° during the test.
This well constitutes the first step of an exploration and appraisal programme from 2009 to 2010 designed to demonstrate the feasibility of a new development pole on OML102, combining the Etisong main discovery and the surrounding structures. The Etisong main discovery when confirmed by further appraisal results should contribute towards helping to meet the Government’s objective of renewing national reserves.
Total E&P Nigeria
Total has been operating in Nigeria for more than 50 years. Developing the country’s deep offshore resources is one of the Group’s main growth drivers in Africa, with, in particular the deep offshore Akpo field in OML 130, which it operates. Akpo is scheduled to come on stream early 2009. Development studies for the Egina oilfield, also located in OML 130, are underway. Additionally the development of the offshore Usan field was launched early 2008 and should come on stream in 2011.
Total’s offshore operated production in Nigeria currently comes from the OML 99, 100 and 102 blocks as part of a joint venture with NNPC. The main fields are Amenam-Kpono, Ofon and Odudu area fields.
The Group’s onshore production comes from the OML 58 block, also operated by Total as part of a joint venture with NNPC. The main fields here are Obagi, for oil, and Ibewa, for gas. A project to increase the production capacity of oil, gas and condensates on this block has recently been launched.
In addition, Total has significant equity production in Nigeria from its interests in non-operated ventures, particularly the SPDC JV (10%) and SNEPCO (12.5%), which includes the Bonga field. Total also holds a 15% interest in NLNG, where annual

Total purchases 50% stake in AMSO
Partnership will develop shale oil in Western Colorado
Paris, January 14, 2009 — Total, the fifth largest international integrated oil and gas company, and IDT Corporation today announced that Total will acquire a 50% stake in IDT’s American Shale Oil, LLC (AMSO) subsidiary.
Under the terms of the agreement, Total and IDT will jointly develop a research and demonstration program to produce and commercialize shale oil utilizing a new in-situ technology on AMSO’s federal leasehold in western Colorado. Total will provide a majority of the funding during the research, development and demonstration (RD&D) phase of the project, and technical assistance throughout the life of the project. AMSO will continue to manage operations during the RD&D phase of the project. Total will assume management responsibilities during the subsequent commercial phase. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close during the first quarter of this year.
AMSO is one of three holders of 10-year leases granted by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to assess, test and demonstrate the potential for commercial shale oil production in western Colorado. Once AMSO has demonstrated that its technology is economically viable and environmentally acceptable, it will have the opportunity to expand its lease to 5,120 acres for commercial development. The rights covered by the commercial preference lease are estimated to contain multi billion barrels of recoverable shale oil.
“Our investment in AMSO furthers our commitment to developing unconventional hydrocarbons”, said Yves-Louis Darricarrère, Total’s E&P President. “Given the magnitude of oil shale resources we believe that this project has an important long-term potential for global energy markets. AMSO has a strongly skilled technical team, as well as interesting original ideas. We look forward to working with them to develop sustainable and environmentally responsible extraction and processing technologies”.
“We are extremely pleased to partner with Total, one of the largest and most technologically sophisticated oil and gas companies in the world”, said Howard Jonas, IDT’s Chairman and AMSO’s Chairman and CEO. “Total complements our team’s technical capabilities with unparalleled expertise and depth in a variety of petroleum research and production disciplines. We particularly value their dedication to finding an approach to oil shale production that respects the unique environment of western Colorado”.
