Next-Generation & Open-Source

Geological Carbon Dioxide Storage Simulator

Paris, November 10, 2020 – After more than two years of joint research, Total, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Stanford University release GEOSX, an open-source simulator for large-scale geological carbon dioxide (CO2) storage.

GEOSX was developed using advanced new technologies in high-performance computing and applied mathematics and aims to improve the management and safety of geological CO2 repositories. Its computing performance is unmatched to date.

The open-source nature of GEOSX aims to ensure a high level of transparency, sharing and community support to pave the way for the large-scale development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies.

“We are proud of the development of GEOSX, the first tool able to simulate the geological storage of CO2 at the gigaton scale. We are making its source code openly available to provide the scientific community the means to participate in the development of CCUS,” said Marie-Noëlle Semeria, Total’s Chief Technology Officer. “GEOSX positions Total, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Stanford as technological leaders in the simulation of CO2 geological storage, a major lever for achieving carbon neutrality.”

“GEOSX combines breakthrough scientific computing and high-performance technologies that will allow Total and the community to accelerate the implementation of future large-scale storage projects, necessary to achieve carbon neutrality objectives on a global scale,” said Professor Hamdi Tchelepi, Chairman of Energy Resources Engineering Department and the projects lead research scientist for Stanford. “The innovations resulting from our joint research program open the door to a new era for the modelling of geological storage of CO2.”

“We are excited to be working with Total and Stanford to support widespread deployment of carbon capture, utilization, and storage projects. Total and CMA CGM Complete World’s Largest Liquefied

Natural Gas Bunkering Operation at Port of Rotterdam

Rotterdam, 16 November 2020 – The CMA CGM Jacques Saadé, the world’s largest containership powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has completed her first LNG bunkering with Total’s LNG bunker vessel, the Gas Agility, on November 13th 2020 at the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The 23,000 TEU1 containership received around 17,300 m3 of LNG, making it the largest LNG bunkering operation to ever take place.

Safe and efficient bunkering operation was performed by the Gas Agility at the Rotterdam World Gateway terminal by means of a ship-to-ship transfer, while the CMA CGM Jacques Saadé carried out cargo operations simultaneously. The supply of LNG was provided by Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions, Total’s dedicated business unit in charge of worldwide bunkering activities. Refueling took approximately 24 hours to complete.

As part of this milestone operation, the carbon footprint of the LNG delivered was further reduced with the introduction of biomethane for approximately 13% of the quantity delivered, through the Guarantee of Origin (GO) certificates mechanism. The biomethane is produced in the Schipol area in the Netherlands, mainly by organic municipal waste

The pioneering bunkering operation is a ground-breaking development for the global LNG market and concretely demonstrates Total and CMA CGM’s pledge to advance the use of LNG as a marine fuel, the best, immediately available solution in terms of energy transition to help reduce the environmental footprint of maritime transport. LNG makes it possible to eliminate almost all the air pollutants generated by the combustion of fossil fuels:

99% of sulphur oxide emissions;

99% of fine particles emissions;

Up to 85% of nitrogen oxide emissions;

A LNG-powered vessel also emits up to 20% less CO2 than conventional fuel-powered systems. The development of bio and synthetic LNG2 will further drive forward LNG as a viable pathway to support the International Maritime Organization’s strategy on reducing GHG emissions from international shipping.

We are really proud of this landmark achievement, which is the culmination of a 3-year close collaboration between Total and CMA CGM,” said Jérôme Leprince-Ringuet, Vice President Marine Fuels at Total. “It also marks the shipping industry’s first commercial use of biomethane on this scale. Such introduction reflects Total’s ambition to get to Net Zero by 2050 and our commitment to help reduce the carbon intensity of the energy products used by our customers.”

1 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit: Unit used to measure a container ship’s cargo carrying capacity.

2 Synthetic LNG is LNG derived from the synthesis of CO2 and hydrogen; it is considered a zero-emission fuel when produced from renewable hydrogen and recycled CO2.

The success of the first LNG bunkering of our flagship in Rotterdam is the culmination of 7 years of research and development by experts from CMA CGM Group and its partners. We are very pleased to have chosen Total for the gas supply of this major industrial project,” said Christine Cabau, Executive Vice President in charge of CMA CGM Group’s industrial assets. “This operation marks the structuring of a chain of excellence for LNG used as a fuel for maritime transport. It is a new step towards accelerating the energy transition in maritime transport and logistics”.

Reduction of Methane Emissions:

Total Strengthens its Commitment with the OGMP 2.0 Initiative

Paris, November 23, 2020 – Total, partner to the initiative since 2014, has joined the second phase of the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0) of the United Nations Environment Programme, which brings together industrial companies, governments and NGOs to better monitor and report methane emissions in order to reduce them. This second phase of the partnership aims at defining a broader and more ambitious methane-reporting framework, extended to the entire gas value chain and to non-operated assets.

“As one of the world leaders in the natural gas value chain, Total is committed to reducing methane emissions to ensure that natural gas continues to play its key role in the energy transition; this new partnership will foster the sharing of industry best practices, especially on non-operated assets, and improve monitoring,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman & CEO of Total. “Our performance is amongst the industry’s best as we have already cut methane emissions by 45% since 2010. And in order to progress further on monitoring, Total invests in cutting-edge R&D programs to support the development of future detection and measurement technologies”.

Total’s methane emissions

Total’s methane emissions stood at 68 kilotons in 2019, representing an emission intensity of around 0.2% of the commercial gas produced on operated upstream oil and gas facilities. The Group’s objective is to reduce that intensity below 0,2%, and notably to reduce it further for the gas assets to below 0.1% of the commercial gas produced.

To control those emissions, Total addresses the various sources of methane – mainly flaring, venting and fugitive emissions – and follows strict design standards to ensure near-zero emissions for its new projects. Total is committed to zero routine flaring by 2030 and has reduced this type of flaring by 80% since 2010.

The Group has an extensive research program to develop emission measurement technologies – with fixed camera, drones or satellites – and has established, in the south of France, a specific dedicated testing site for such technologies (TADI – Total Anomaly Detection Initiatives).

Total is a member of numerous industry associations and reviews regularly their positions on climate, in particular on methane, to promote the axes of progress to which it is committed. The Group also takes position on public policies when relevant, as in 2019 when it publicly voiced its opposition to the rollback of methane regulations in the United States.

About the OGMP

The OGMP, launched at the UN Climate Summit in 2014, was created by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) as a voluntary initiative to help companies reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. It is a collaboration between the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the European Commission (EC), the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and 64 leading oil and gas companies representing 30 % of the world’s oil and gas production on five continents, and offers a credible platform to help member companies demonstrate actual reductions to industry stakeholders.
