UK North Sea: Total Makes Gas Discovery
and Awarded Three Adjacent Licences

Paris, September 16, 2004 — Total announces a positive appraisal of the Laggan gas field on the Atlantic Margin in the UK North Sea and the award, as part of the 22^nd round of applications, of three frontier licences adjacent to Laggan.

On Laggan, two appraisal wells were drilled in water depths of 600 meters some 120 kilometers west of the Shetland Islands. The well 2006/4AZ was tested at 37.8 million cubic feet of gas per day. Information gathered is presently being analyzed and will be integrated into the necessary studies for the final decision for the development of Laggan.

Total is the operator of Laggan with a 50% stake in partnership with Dong Norge A/S, ENI UKCS Ltd. and Texaco Britain Ltd.

In addition, UK authorities have just attributed to Total, within the framework of the 22^nd round of licensing, a group of permits comprised of Blocks 214/23, 24, 28, 29, 205/5 and 214/25, all located in the immediate proximity of the Laggan field.

These successes illustrate Total’s engagement to continuing exploration of the UK continental shelf.

Republic of Congo: Total Makes Ultra-Deep Offshore Discovery

Paris, September 20, 2004 — Total announces an oil discovery on its ultra-deep offshore permit Mer Très Profonde Sud (MTPS), located approximately 200 kilometres southwest of Pointe Noire (Republic of Congo) in water depths near to 2,000 meters.

The new discovery well Pégase Nord Marine 1 was drilled to a total depth of 3,622 meters and tested at a flow rate of 14,360 barrels of oil per day. Further evaluation of this well and its potential are presently ongoing.

The MTPS permit was awarded in May 1997 and covers an area of more than 5,000 square kilometres with water depths ranging from 1,300 to 3,000 meters. Total E&P Congo is the operator (40%) in consortium with Eni Congo (30%) and Esso Exploration and Production Congo (MTP Sud) Ltd. (30%).

Pégase Nord Marine 1 is the second discovery well on this permit following the completion of Andromède Marine 1 discovery well in May 2000. These two wells could contribute to forming a new development pole.

Total has a strong position in the Republic of Congo and ranks as the leading oil producer as well as the largest foreign investor. In 2003 the group’s equity share of production in Republic of Congo was an average of 91,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Total to invest in Russia:
Plans to acquire 25% stake in Russian gas company Novatek

Paris, September 22, 2004 —Total has signed an agreement setting out the terms of the Group’s plan to purchase a 25% stake plus one share in the Russian company OAO Novatek.

Novatek, created in 1994, operates three major gas fields — Tarkosale East, Khanchey and Yurkharov — with production of around 18 billion cubic meters of gas in 2003 (approximately 1.8 billion cubic feet per day), up nearly 50% from the previous year. These fields, of which the last two entered into production in 2003, are located in the main gas region of Russia, Yamalo-Nenets (Western Siberia), and represent proved and probable reserves of approximately 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

The documents relating to the acquisition of this stake holding in Novatek have been submitted to Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service for authorisation.

“This partnership with Novatek will allow Total to increase its production and reserves of hydrocarbons and marks a further step in its strategy of participating in the development of Russian resources,” declared Thierry Desmarest, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Total.

“Novatek is a young company with new production facilities and significant reserves. Total will bring its expertise in the field of production, transport and processing hydrocarbons, which will assure, within the best conditions, ongoing growth in hydrocarbon production and the construction of new process installations on Russian soil”, added Mr. Desmarest.

Nigeria : Significant Discovery in the Western Usan field area

Paris, October 1, 2004 — Total announces that its Nigerian Operating subsidiary, Elf Petroleum Nigeria Ltd. (EPNL), has made a significant discovery in the western Usan field area in the deepwater Oil Prospecting License (OPL) 222, offshore southeastern Nigeria.

The Usan 5 well, located around 110 kilometres offshore and 6 kilometres west of the Usan 4 discovery well in water depths of approximately 750 meters, is the fourth successful appraisal of the Usan field discovered in 2002.

Oil was sampled at Usan 5 in several levels confirming the presence of additional quantities of oil as well as further potential in previously untested reservoirs.

Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. (NNPC) is concessionaire for OPL 222 under a production sharing contract operated by Elf Petroleum Nigeria Ltd. (20 percent), in partnership with Chevron Petroleum Nigeria Ltd., Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria (Offshore East) Ltd. and Nexen Petroleum Nigeria Ltd.

Present in Nigeria since 1962, Total’s equity production was 196,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2003. The group also has a 15% partnership interest in the Bonny liquefaction plant, where trains four and five are presently under construction and the construction of a sixth has been approved.

Creation of Arkema and Total’s New Chemicals Business Organization

Paris, October 4, 2004 — In line with the February 19 announcement, on October 1 Total put in place a new organization for its Chemicals business, marked by the creation of a new legal entity, Arkema.

The Chemicals Division, headed by François Cornélis, now consists of three business units:

— Total Petrochemicals, covering all petrochemical operations and fertilizers;

— Specialties, combining Hutchinson (rubber processing), Bostik (adhesives), Cray Valley and Sartomer (resins), Atotech (electroplating);

— Arkema, a new unit destined to be independent, encompassing Vinyl Products, Industrial Chemicals and Performance Products.

“Headed by Thierry Le Hénaff, Arkema is intended to become a competitive, independent operator by 2006*, able to take part in chemical industry consolidation in its areas of business. The new unit will take advantage of its remaining time with Total to enhance its performance while putting in place the organization necessary for an independent company. The creation of Arkema is a major milestone in Total’s Chemicals business reorganization, which is designed to streamline corporate structures and provide Arkema with the resources needed to become more independent, closer to customers and more responsive in its decision-making processes,” said Thierry Desmarest, Chairman and CEO of Total.
