Total Energie,
Celebrating 20 Years of Photovoltaic Solar Energy

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Total’s involvement in solar energy. Since it founded Total Energie, a unit specialized in solar power, in early summer 1983, the Group has become a front-ranking player in the field.

Total Energie assembles, distributes, installs and provides maintenance for solar panels and other equipment delivering photovoltaic electricity. The company is particularly active in four areas : pumping, commercial applications, isolated systems and grid connections.

Now a joint subsidiary of Total and French utility Electricité de France, Total Energie is based near Lyons, France, and generated sales of approximately € 60 million in 2002. The company can leverage a network of around 15 subsidiaries, mainly in the French overseas departments and territories, in African countries, Madagascar and Germany.

Total Energie is currently taking part in two major rural electrification programs, one in Morocco (16,000 households) and one in South Africa (15,000 households). These programs, deployed in isolated areas, will give access to lighting and some appliances to thousands of people previously without electricity.

Total Energie will also be building a solar panel production plant in Toulouse with a capacity of 5 MW a year. The facility is scheduled to be commissioned in early 2004. Its output will be sufficient to install solar panels on the roofs of around 2,500 homes a year in Europe.

The creation of Total Energie 20 years ago was the starting point of Total’s commitment to developing applications for renewable energy. The Company gradually extended its initiatives, mainly in wind and solar power. Total inaugurated its first wind turbines at the Mardyck refinery, near Dunkirk, France. In addition, Photovoltech, in which Total has a 42.5% interest, is building a plant in Tienen, Belgium, scheduled for completion in early fall. The facility will produce high-efficiency polycrystalline silicon-based photovoltaic cells and have an annual capacity of close to 10 MW.

Total Renews Technical and Scientific Cooperation Agreement
with the State Polar Academy of St. Petersburg

Paris – June 27, 2003 – Total has renewed its technical and scientific cooperation agreement with the State Polar Academy of St. Petersburg for a further two years. This initiative, initiated on July 1, 2001, falls under the scope of the intergovernmental cooperation agreement signed by France and Russia in 1992.

Total and the State Polar Academy work together on regional projects whose objective is to promote sustainable economic and social development in the Russian Far North, while respecting the environment and traditionals of populations.

This cooperation, which is part of the Group’s sustainable development commitment, includes training highly qualified specialists; hosting and supervising students; conducting environmental, social and ethnological studies; providing logistical and financial support for the Academy, notably for Franco-Russian teacher exchanges; and developing distance learning via the Web.

The State Polar Academy was founded by Azourget Chaoukenbaeva, the Dean, and Professor Jean Malaurie, following joint Franco-Russian polar expeditions. The Board of Directors is chaired by Arthur Chilingarov, distinguished polar explorer, elected representative for the Nenets Autonomous Area and Deputy Speaker of the Duma, Russia’s parliament. These new offices were inaugurated on May 30 by French President, Jacques Chirac, an Russian Education Minister, Vladimir Filippov.

Pakistan : Signing of Two Production Sharing Contracts
for Offshore Blocks G and H

Paris – July 3, 2003 – Total announces the signature by its subsidiary Total Exploration and Production Pakistan of two production sharing contracts with the government of Pakistan. The agreements cover the deep Offshore Blocks G and H around 200 kilometres from the coast in water depths of between 1,700 and 3,400 meters.

Total is the operator of both of these blocks with an interest of 40% in partnership with Petronas (30%), OMV (15%) and the Pakistani companies Marigas (5%) and OGDCL (10%).

The signature of these contracts confirms Total’s ambition to continually develop new resources and the company’s ability to explore and produce hydrocarbons in technically challenging environments.

Gas Discovery in the UK North Sea

Paris – July 4, 2003 – Total has made significant gas and condensate discovery in Block 29/5b, in the Central Graben Area of the North Sea UK, around 240 kilometers east of Aberdeen.

Exploration well 29/5b-F7z was spudded to evaluate the potential of the West Franklin prospect, where the water depth is 93 meters, in one of the most challenging high pressure/high temperature environments yet encountered in the North Sea (1,150 bars and more than 200 °C). On test, the well flowed at a rate of around one million cubic meters of gas per day, with 2,000 barrels per day of condensate.

The discovery, which was made at 5,750 meters and is one of the deepest ever achieved on the UK Continental Shelf, will be put into production from the adjacent Franklin facilities. The Elgin and Franklin fields, which came on stream in 2001, currently produce 240,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Condensate is transported to the Scottish coast via the Forties Pipeline System and then to the Kinneil Terminal. Gas is transported to the Bacton terminal via the Shearwater Elgin Area Line, from where it can supply the UK market or continental Europe via the Interconnector.

This new discovery reinforces Total’s operations in the UK sector of the North Sea and confirms the Group’s strategy of applying its experience in high pressure/high temperature environments to search for new reserves.

Total operates the Elgin/Franklin fields and the West Franklin exploration well on behalf of partners Elgin Franklin Oil & Gas (Elf Exploration UK, 35.784%; Gaz de France, 10.389%), Eni UK Limited, BG Group, Ruhrgas, Chevron-Texaco, ExxonMobil, Dyas and Oranje-Nassau.
