(NYSE: AMZ) (AMS) announced today that it has successfully closed its previously announced repurchase of 1,400,000 of its shares from Cobalt Corporation for $18.2 million or $13.00 per share. AMS closed at $15.34 per share on Friday, March 22, 2002. Cobalt, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin, now owns 4,909,525, or approximately 39%, of the approximately 12,555,000 outstanding AMS shares. "As a result of the reduction in total shares outstanding, our earlier earnings guidance for 2002 needs to be adjusted upward by $0.05 per share for the last three quarters of the year," said Gary D. Guengerich, AMS Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. "The effect of having fewer shares outstanding, combined with the reduction in investment income on the funds used to repurchase Cobalt's AMS shares, means that we now expect full-year income of between $1.20 and $1.30 per share," Guengerich said. More Ad One Earlier guidance had been between $1.15 and $1.25 per share for the full-year 2002.
