Note 9—Comprehensive Income (Loss)

        Comprehensive income (loss) is comprised of net income (loss), changes in pension and other postretirement benefit plans, unrealized gains or losses on investments, gains or losses from the effect of cash flow hedges and foreign currency translation adjustments. Foreign currency translation adjustments are not adjusted for income taxes as they relate to indefinite investments in non-U.S. subsidiaries. The differences between net income (loss) and comprehensive income (loss) for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2012 and 2011 were as follows (in thousands):
