Defined Benefit Plan

We sponsor a noncontributory qualified retirement plan. The components of net periodic benefit cost for this plan are as follows (in thousands):

For the nine months ended September 30, 2017 and 2016, we contributed $2.5 million and $2.0 million, respectively, to the qualified retirement plan. Currently, we do not anticipate making any additional contributions to this plan during 2017.

Defined Contribution Plans

Compensation expense related to our defined contribution plans was $.9 million for both the three months ended September 30, 2017 and 2016, and $3.0 million and $2.6 million for nine months ended September 30, 2017 and 2016, respectively.
