Segment Reporting [Abstract]
SEGMENT REPORTING

NOTE 17. SEGMENT REPORTING

Segment reporting is based on the “management approach”: how management organizes the company’s reportable segments for which separate financial information is (i) available and (ii) evaluated regularly by the chief operating decision maker in deciding how to allocate resources and in assessing performance. Cadence’s chief operating decision maker is its President and Chief Executive Officer, or CEO, who reviews Cadence’s consolidated results as one reportable segment. In making operating decisions, the CEO primarily considers consolidated financial information, accompanied by disaggregated information about revenues by geographic region.

Outside the United States, Cadence markets and supports its products and services primarily through its subsidiaries. Revenue is attributed to geography based on the country in which the product is used or services are delivered. Long-lived assets are attributed to geography based on the country where the assets are located.

The following table presents a summary of revenue by geography for the three and nine months ended October 1, 2011 and October 2, 2010:
