Cash, Cash Equivalents & Short-Term Investments

The Company considers all highly liquid investments with original maturities of 90 days or less to be cash equivalents.  Cash equivalents consist of cash savings and U.S. government insured certificates of deposit (CDs).  As of June 30, 2011 and December 31, 2010, all cash equivalents were in CDs.

As of June 30, 2011, the Company had $2.0 million of CDs with maturities of greater than 13 weeks classified as short-term investments.  The Company accounts for investment securities in accordance with the FASB codification topic ASC 320, “Fair Value Debt and Equity Securities,” (ASC 320).  Under ASC 320, investments that the Company has positive intent and ability to hold to maturity are classified as held-to-maturity and are reported at amortized cost, which approximates fair market value. The Company intends and has the ability to hold all the CDs to maturity.
