7. Equipment and Furnishings

Equipment and furnishings at December 31, 2011 and 2010 consist of the following (in thousands):

Depreciation and amortization expense for the years ended December 31, 2011, 2010 and 2009 were $95,517, $107,666 and $475,316, respectively.

Examples include land, buildings, machinery and equipment, and other types of furniture and equipment including, but not limited to, office equipment, furniture and fixtures, and computer equipment and software.
