Share-based Compensation [Abstract]
Share-Based Compensation
Share-Based Compensation
The Company recognized $3.6 million and $3.4 million of compensation expense associated with share-based awards for the three months ended December 31, 2016 and January 2, 2016, respectively.
The Company uses the Black-Scholes valuation model to determine the fair value of stock options and stock-settled stock appreciation rights ("SARs"). The Company uses its stock price on grant date as the fair value assigned to restricted stock units ("RSUs").
The Company uses the Monte Carlo valuation model to determine the fair value of performance stock units ("PSUs") at the date of grant. The PSUs granted in fiscal 2016 and prior years are payable in shares and vest based on the relative total shareholder return ("TSR") of the Company's common stock as compared to companies in the Russell 3000 Index during a three year performance period. The number of shares that may be issued pursuant to PSUs ranges from zero to 0.3 million.
The Company recognizes share-based compensation expense over the share-based awards' vesting period.
