INTEREST AND OTHER INCOME (EXPENSE)

Interest and other income (expense) was as follows:

As discussed in Note 5, Interest expense consists primarily of interest expense associated with long-term notes. Interest expense associated with the notes was $41.4 million, $49.5 million and $31.7 million during the years ended June 29, 2019, June 30, 2018 and June 24, 2017, respectively. Interest expense associated with debt discounts and issuance fees was $2.0 million, $2.9 million and $2.7 million during the fiscal years ended June 29, 2019, June 30, 2018 and June 24, 2017, respectively. Interest income consists of interest earned on cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments.
