Health Insurance Industry Tax
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and a reconciliation measure, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (together, Health Reform Legislation) includes an annual, nondeductible insurance industry tax (Health Insurance Industry Tax). As of June 30, 2015, the liability recorded in accounts payable and accrued liabilities related to the Health Insurance Industry Tax was $1.8 billion. The corresponding deferred cost recorded in prepaid expenses and other current assets on the Condensed Consolidated Balance Sheets was $900 million. There was no liability or asset related to the Health Insurance Industry Tax recorded as of December 31, 2014 as the Health Insurance Industry Tax was paid in September 2014 and the asset was fully expensed by year end.
