Panera Bread Reports System-Wide Comparable Bakery-Cafe Sales Decreased 3.9%
for the Four Weeks Ended May 17, 2003

St. Louis, MO, May 29, 2003 — Panera Bread Company (Nasdaq:PNRA) today reported that system-wide comparable bakery-cafe sales decreased 3.9% for the four weeks ended May 17, 2003. The breakdown between company-owned and franchised bakery-cafes is as follows:

Average system-wide weekly sales (excluding the one specialty bakery-cafe and closed locations) decreased 2.8% to $34,970 for the four weeks ended May 17, 2003 compared to $35,985 for the four weeks ended May 18, 2002.

Comparable bakery-cafe sales in the current period were in line with expectations. The moderately negative decrease in comparable bakery-cafes sales is on top of a 10% increase during the same period of 2002 and reflects the negative impact on comparable sales from the shift in Easter in 2003.
