Fund Manager´s Comments
Global equity markets recorded mostly positive returns during July 2022. During the month, the MSCI World Index increased 7.9% and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index decreased 0.7%, affected by negative returns in Asia. Global central banks kept tightening their monetary policies; the U.S. Federal Reserve (the “Fed”) increased for the second consecutive meeting its target interest rate by 75 basis points to a range of 2.25% and 2.50%, while the European Central Bank also increased its three key interest rates by 50 basis points each, with the main refinancing rate standing at 0.50%. The DJIA and the S&P 500 increased 6.7% and 9.1%, respectively; while the interest rate on the 10-year Treasury note decreased 36 basis points to 2.65% and the U.S. dollar appreciated 1.2% (measured by the DXY Index4), during July 2022. In local news, Mexico´s preliminary GDP5 for the second quarter of 2022 reported an annual increase of 1.9%. Regarding credit ratings, S&P revised the outlook on Mexico´s long-term rating from negative to stable and affirmed its ‘BBB’ credit rating, as it expects Mexico to maintain cautious fiscal and monetary policies and do not foresee passage of constitutional initiatives that could affect the business climate. However, Moody´s downgraded its Mexico credit rating one notch to ‘Baa2’, aligning it to the credit ratings given by its peers, as it expects that Mexico’s economic and fiscal trends will continue to gradually undermine its overall credit profile, while it changed its outlook to stable from negative. Despite Moody´s downgrade, Mexico maintains its investment grade credit rating. Mexican-listed companies reported positive financial results for the second quarter of 2022, with strong growth in sales of 14.4% versus the second quarter of 2021, while Ebitda increased 2.6% given cost pressures caused by the current high global inflation.
