Description

The Mexico Fund, Inc. (the "Fund") is a non-diversified closed-end management investment company with the investment objective of long-term capital appreciation through investments in securities, primarily equity, listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange. The Fund provides a vehicle to investors who wish to invest in Mexican companies through a managed non-diversified portfolio as part of their overall investment program. The Fund's shares are listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE") under the symbol "MXF."

Managed Distribution Plan ("MDP")

The Board of Directors of the Fund has authorized quarterly distributions under the MDP at an annual rate of 6% of the Fund's net asset value ("NAV") per share recorded on the last business day of the previous calendar year. With each distribution, the Fund will issue a notice to stockholders and an accompanying press release, which will provide detailed information regarding the amount and composition of the distribution and other information required by the Fund's MDP exemptive order. The Fund's Board of Directors may amend or terminate the MDP at any time without prior notice to stockholders; however, at this time, there are no reasonably foreseeable circumstances that might cause the termination of the MDP. You should not draw any conclusions about the Fund's investment performance from the amount of distributions or from the terms of the Fund's MDP.

Fund Manager´s Comments

Global equity markets were mixed during May 2016. The U.S. Federal Reserve´s (the "Fed") April meeting minutes implied a possible increase in the overnight interest rate during its June 14^th and 15^th meeting, increasing investors' risk aversion during the month. A referendum will take place in the United Kingdom ("UK") on June 23^rd to vote on the UK's European Union membership, identified by investors as "Brexit". The DJIA and the S&P 500 increased 0.1% and 1.5% during the month, respectively; the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note increased one basis point to 1.85% and the U.S. dollar appreciated 3.0% (measured by the DXY Index⁶). The MSCI Emerging Markets Index declined 3.9% in May and commodity prices decreased, with the value of gold and silver decreasing 6.0% and 10.4%, respectively. Notwithstanding the above, the price of oil recovered further to $49.1 USD/bbl (measured by West Texas Intermediate), increasing 5.2% during the month and 18.8% year-to-date. The MSCI Mexico Index decreased 7.9% during May, driven by the Mexican peso depreciation of 7.0% to Ps. $18.47.

In local news, Mexico´s Central Bank ("Banxico") maintained the overnight interest rate unchanged at 3.75%. Mexico´s Federal Government announced a public debt buy-back worth Ps. 98 billion (0.5% of GDP), with the resources transferred from Banxico in April 2016, concluding successfully its buy-back program. Mexico´s official GDP for the first quarter of 2016 grew at an annual rate of 2.6%.
