“New Medtronic” Leader Interview with Chris O’Connell

What Is Your Background?

My background? Originally from Chicago, Illinois and my first mini-career after college was as a banker. And then after graduate school, I decided to come to Medtronic. And I’ve been here now for 20 years. It’s been a remarkable 20 years. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and hopefully have been able to make an impact on our Mission.

Why Did You Pursue a Career In Healthcare?

I was very attracted to Medtronic because of the Mission and the ability to make a personal impact, not just a business impact. And what I also saw at Medtronic in an industry was a great dynamic industry space with a lot of change and a lot of growth. And I figured with that change and growth would come opportunity. And there certainly has been a lot of opportunity for Medtronic in this industry in the last 20 years.

What Is a Key Area of Passion for You?

I’m very much driven by the purpose of the work I do and that’s obviously a great situation at Medtronic to have our Mission to pursue every day. But I’m also very much driven by people and the individuals that I have a chance to work with and the teams that I have a chance to work with all around the world. And the third thing is I’m very driven by trying to make a personal impact and making sure that what I can do for the company hits the sweet spot of what we’re trying to achieve overall so that we can fulfill our goals and reach our dreams.

What Do You Think of This Deal and the New Medtronic?

It’s certainly going to be a much larger Medtronic and with that comes broadly the opportunity to enhance our Mission and extend our Mission to so many more people around the world. And personally, I’m excited in a specific way about the Neurovascular Business that’s coming into the Restorative Therapies Group and the chance to fill a key gap in our product line as we attempt to serve the emerging neuroscience centers with now stroke treatment devices to complement everything else we’re doing for the neurosurgeon, the neurologist and all of the related specialties in the neuroscience world.

What Are the Key Challenges We Will Need to Overcome?

Well, from a business standpoint, I think the biggest challenge we’re going to have is growth. We’re going to have a $27 billion company and to grow 5% or more, we’re going to have to add a $1.5 billion revenue every year and that’s going to be a lot of work. Another challenge though, to me is just with the scale and size of the company. How do we keep Medtronic vital and nimble and very people focused as we become larger?

What Is Your Leadership Style?

My leadership style, I think, is very Mission driven. I work to connect the dots of everything we do to ultimately maximize our effect on our ultimate purpose which is serving more patients. I’m also a very people oriented leader. I get my energy from people and I’m very focused on helping our people succeed. And the third thing I’d say is I’m very competitive and I want to win. And that plays out in all of our strategies and how we go into the marketplace.

What Activities/Interests Do You Enjoy Outside of Work?

Outside of work I spend most of my time chasing around my four kids. I really enjoy being involved in their lives in school and in sports and at home. I’m also a sports fanatic myself. I like to be very physically active on the weekends and outside of work to try to keep myself in shape and participate in a lot of different type of sports. And I also like to travel and I like to read. I read a lot of newspapers and interesting books of all kinds. So just try to keep plugged in to the broader world out there.
