FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

American Science and Engineering, Inc. Receives $1.2 Million Order from
the U.S. Government for Parcel X-ray Inspection Systems

BILLERICA, Mass. – October 6, 2005 American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI) (AS&E®), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the receipt of a $1.2 million order from the U.S. Government for four Model 101ZZ parcel X-ray inspection systems. The order also includes installation, service and maintenance, and operator training.

“AS&E’s combined Z® Backscatter and transmission technologies make our parcel systems the most advanced X-ray inspection capable of finding a complete range of threats,” said Anthony Fabiano, President and CEO. “The Model 101ZZ’s ability to uncover both organic and inorganic threats is ideal for the U.S. Government’s anti-terrorism applications. We are pleased to work with U.S. Officials to provide these technologies to ensure parcel security.”

Parcel, Mail, and Baggage Inspection Systems offer varying tunnel sizes and configurations to fit various inspection environments. Compact X-ray units screen smaller items, including mail and briefcases; while larger, open-tunnel systems inspect oversized baggage and small cargo.  These systems are primarily used in government facilities, airports, high-security federal facilities, commercial office buildings, and convention centers. The Model 101ZZ is designed for clients who must inspect numerous large and small packages quickly and efficiently.  One monitor displays Z Backscatter images from opposing sides; the other displays images from the transmission X-rays. This dual technology not only increases accuracy, but also speeds inspection.
