EX-99 5 gpu_8k-092801exc2.txt EXHIBIT (C) 2 Exhibit (c) 2 GPU and FirstEnergy Joint News Release September 28, 2001 GPU, FIRSTENERGY EXTEND MERGER TERMINATION DATE Morristown, NJ -- GPU, Inc. and FirstEnergy Corp. announced today that, in accordance with the terms of their merger agreement, the termination date for their agreement has been extended until December 31, 2001. The merger was approved earlier this week by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and now awaits approval by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. GPU, Inc., headquartered in Morristown, NJ, is a registered public utility holding company providing utility and utility-related services to customers throughout the world. GPU serves 4.6 million customers directly through its electric companies -- GPU Energy in the US, GPU Power UK in England, and Emdersa in Argentina.
