30 GATX Rail North America’s Engineering Expertise GATX’s engineering team, including experienced mechanical, structural, and chemical engineers, communicates regularly with customers and tailors solutions to meet their needs. Examples of engineering support include: Preventative maintenance, Inspection plans, Car design / specifications, Chemical engineering, and customer-specific enhancements AUTO CARRIER CONVERSION PROJECT  GATX Engineering successfully converted older flatcars to auto carriers. Some of these flatcars were originally designed to carry over-the-road trailers and others were designed to carry standard containers (ISO containers). This was an extensive end-to-end engineering project that repositioned these cars into a more attractive market while also increasing their statutory lives from 50 years to 65 years. INCREASED GROSS RAIL LOAD PROJECTS  These projects entail structural modifications to increase the gross rail load for existing, low-capacity cars.
