Amortization expense related to intangible assets for fiscal years 2014, 2013, and 2012, was $9.1 million, $8.0 million, and $7.2 million, respectively.

The Company uses the acquisition method of accounting for business combinations.  Annual goodwill impairment testing and trade name impairment testing is performed during the fourth quarter of each year based on balances as of the last Saturday of the Company's eighth fiscal period, unless events or circumstances indicate earlier impairment testing is required. No impairment loss was recognized for 2014, 2013, or 2012.

The 2014 acquired goodwill in the Water Systems segment primarily related to the Company's acquisition of Bombas Leao. The remaining acquired goodwill in both the Water Systems and Fueling Systems segments related to two immaterial controlling interest acquisitions made in India. The 2013 acquired goodwill in the Water Systems segment related to a series of immaterial acquisitions by the Company during 2013.
