The FTC clearance pertains to both companies' non-bank financial operations, including asset and wealth management, brokerage and insurance. Wachovia and First Union said they have been granted early termination of the waiting period required under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. The waiting period is designed to give U.S. regulators time to review mergers and acquisitions for anti-competitive issues.
