NATURE OF THE BUSINESS
1. NATURE OF THE BUSINESS

New Jersey Resources Corporation provides regulated gas distribution services, transportation and storage services and operates certain unregulated businesses primarily through the following:

New Jersey Natural Gas Company provides natural gas utility service to approximately 555,000 customers in central and northern New Jersey and is subject to rate regulation by the BPU. NJNG comprises the Natural Gas Distribution segment.

NJR Clean Energy Ventures Corporation, the Company's clean energy subsidiary, comprises the Clean Energy Ventures segment and consists of the Company's capital investments in commercial and residential solar projects located throughout New Jersey. Clean Energy Ventures finalized the sale of its remaining wind assets on February 7, 2019; see Note 18. Acquisitions and Dispositions for more details.

NJR Energy Services Company comprises the Energy Services segment. Energy Services maintains and transacts around a portfolio of natural gas storage and transportation capacity contracts and provides physical wholesale energy, retail energy and energy management services in the U.S. and Canada.

NJR Midstream Holdings Corporation, which comprises the Midstream segment, invests in energy-related ventures which include the Company's 50 percent combined ownership interest in Steckman Ridge, located in Pennsylvania, the Company's 20 percent ownership interest in PennEast and the wholly-owned subsidiaries of Leaf River, which was acquired on October 11, 2019 and Adelphia, which was acquired on January 13, 2020, and is subject to FERC regulation. See Note 17. Acquisitions and Dispositions for more information regarding these acquisitions.

NJR Retail Holdings Corporation has two principal subsidiaries, NJR Home Services Company, which provides heating, central air conditioning, standby generators, solar and other indoor and outdoor comfort products to residential homes throughout New Jersey, and Commercial Realty & Resources Corp., which owns commercial real estate. NJR Home Services Company and Commercial Realty & Resources Corp. are included in Home Services and Other operations.

Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic

In March 2020, COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and has spread globally, including throughout the United States. The Company’s Unaudited Condensed Consolidated Financial Statements reflect estimates and assumptions made by management that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities at the balance sheet date and reported amounts of revenue and expenses during the reporting periods presented. The Company considered the impacts of COVID-19 on the assumptions and estimates used and determined that there have been no material adverse impacts on the Company’s results of operations as of June 30, 2020.
