Restructuring Costs

During the years ended December 31, 2015, 2014 and 2013, the Company recorded net pre-tax restructuring expenses totaling $1.4 million, $17.0 million and $27.5 million, respectively. In 2013, the Company initiated a realignment plan that included closing six not-to-scale sites in the United States and Europe and a transfer of those operations to the Company's larger facilities. The Company also consolidated its optics and laser manufacturing businesses to better realize the benefits of vertical integration in these areas.

The Company recorded the restructuring expenses in the segments as follows (in thousands):
