       This Prospectus Supplement relates to the Prospectus dated November 23,
  1992 for the Dividend Reinvestment and Stock Purchase Plan (the "Plan") of
  North Fork Bancorporation, Inc.

       The Plan has been amended effective July 1, 1994 to increase the handling
  charge for any sales transactions in common stock effected by the Plan
  Administrator in the accounts of Plan Participants at their request from $5.00
  per transaction to $10.00 per transaction.  Specifically, the information in
  this notice regarding handling charges supersedes the information regarding
  such charges contained in Questions 27 and 28 of the November 23, 1992
  Prospectus.

       In all other respects, the Prospectus remains in full force and effect.
