Segments

Segment Information

The Company operates three reportable segments: Consumer Domestic, Consumer International and Specialty Products Division.  These segments are determined based on differences in the nature of products and organizational and ownership structures.  The Company also has a Corporate segment.

Segment revenues are derived from the sale of the following products:

The Corporate segment income consists of equity in earnings of affiliates.  As of June 30, 2021, the Company held 50% ownership interests in each of Armand and ArmaKleen, respectively.  The Company’s equity in earnings of Armand and ArmaKleen, totaling $2.8 and $2.0 for the three months ended June 30, 2021 and 2020, respectively, and $5.4 and $3.6 for the six months ended June 30, 2021 and 2020, respectively, are included in the Corporate segment.

 

Certain subsidiaries that are included in the Consumer International segment manufacture and sell personal care products to the Consumer Domestic segment.  These sales are eliminated from the Consumer International segment results set forth in the table below.

Intersegment sales from Consumer International to Consumer Domestic, which are not reflected in the table, were $2.6 and $2.8 for the three months ended June 30, 2021 and June 30, 2020, respectively, and were $5.2 and $5.8 for the six months ended June 30, 2021 and June 30, 2020, respectively.

In determining income before income taxes, interest expense, investment earnings and certain aspects of other income and expense were allocated among segments based upon each segment’s relative income from operations.

Corporate segment consists of equity in earnings of affiliates from Armand and ArmaKleen for the three and six months ended June 30, 2021 and June 30, 2020.

Results for the three months ended June 30, 2021 include a $38.0 reduction of SG&A expenses to adjust the Flawless business acquisition liability, of which $32.3 was recorded to Consumer Domestic and $5.7 was recorded to Consumer International.  Results for the six months ended June 30, 2021 include a $57.0 reduction of SG&A expenses to adjust the Flawless business acquisition liability, of which $48.4 was recorded to Consumer Domestic and $8.6 was recorded to Consumer International.

Results for the three months ended June 30, 2020 include a $6.0 increase of SG&A expenses to adjust the Flawless business acquisition liability, of which $5.1 was recorded to Consumer Domestic and $0.9 was recorded to Consumer International.  Results for the six months ended June 30, 2020 include a $21.0 reduction of SG&A expenses to adjust the Flawless business acquisition liability, of which $17.9 was recorded to Consumer Domestic and $3.1 was recorded to Consumer International.  In the first quarter of 2020, the Company sold its PERL WEISS® toothpaste brand in Germany resulting in a reduction in SG&A expenses of $3.0 recorded in Consumer International.
