Philips announces the acquisition of Traxtal a medical technology innovator in image-guided procedures
Monday, May 04, 2009
Philips becomes one of the leading providers of solutions for medical procedures performed under image guidance
Leadership position cemented by combining Traxtals advanced computer assisted soft tissue navigation technology and Philips leadership in medical imaging
Acquisition strengthens Philips position as a leading provider of minimally invasive therapy solutions
Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Toronto, Canada Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) announced today that it has acquired Canada-based Traxtal Inc., an innovative medical technology company in the field of minimally-invasive instruments and software for image-guided intervention and therapy. Traxtals navigation solution functions as a GPS for medical instruments, designed to make interventional radiology procedures more accurate while aiming to reduce contrast, radiation dose and interventional time. Coupled with Philips strong position in medical imaging, this acquisition enables Philips to become one of the leading healthcare solutions providers for image guided procedures.
Image-guided procedures are one of the most important breakthroughs in the healthcare industry in decades. This acquisition allows Philips to significantly enhance its abilities in this rapidly-emerging field, and will help us further realize our ambition to offer the best quality of care in the most efficient way possible, said Steve Rusckowski, Chief Executive Officer of Philips Healthcare sector.
Philips is already a leader in providing solutions that enable the opening of obstructed arteries under X-Ray guidance. The acquisition of Traxtal, with its innovative technologies in image-based navigation, opens up great opportunities for further cutting edge, minimally-invasive intervention and therapy solutions in combination with our other leading diagnostic and imaging products in Ultrasound, CT and MR. This is consistent with our care cycle approach in key strategic areas such as Womens Health, Oncology and Cardiology, extending our solutions beyond diagnosis into image guidance and therapy, Mr. Rusckowski continued.
Traxtal complements Philips offering in the area of minimally-invasive procedures. Traxtals navigation solution displays, during the procedure, the instruments position, orientation, and trajectory on medical images such as Ultrasound or CT. An example is the radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors during this procedure Traxtals PercuNav system helps guide and monitor the positioning of the ablation needle towards the center of the lesion.
Traxtal, headquartered in Toronto, is a pioneer in the innovation, development and manufacturing of computer assisted soft tissue navigation technologies. Traxtal was founded in 1996 to develop advanced instrumentation for image guided intervention, and currently has 45 employees. Philips has had a partnership with Traxtal to provide integrated soft tissue therapeutic and diagnostic navigation solutions since 2006. Traxtal will become part of the Ultrasound business within the Philips Healthcare sector. Financial details of this agreement were not disclosed.

Zumtobel and Philips sign comprehensive cross licensing agreement
Tuesday, May 05, 2009
Agreement includes Philips LED-based luminaires licensing program patents
Mutual compensation scheme reflects strong technology position of both parties
TridonicAtco and Ledon become qualified suppliers under Philips LED-based luminaires licensing program
New York, United States The Zumtobel Group of Austria and Royal Philips Electronics of The Netherlands have concluded a comprehensive, worldwide, cross licensing agreement for current and future patent rights in the fields of lighting electronics and solid state lighting. The agreement mainly covers driver and control technologies for changing intensity and color of conventional and solid state lighting systems. A mutual compensation scheme reflects the technology strengths of both parties in the lighting market. A core component of the agreement is the Philips LED-based luminaires licensing program introduced in 2008.
As a result of this agreement the Zumtobel Group with all its brands becomes a qualified supplier under the Philips LED-based luminaires licensing program. TridonicAtco and Ledon, the Zumtobel Groups OEM brands, can now offer its customers the advantage of being exempted from paying royalties to Philips under the terms of its LED-based luminaires licensing program (www.ip.philips.com/licensing/ssl).
We are very pleased that we have been able to further exploit the outstanding technology position of the Zumtobel Group through this comprehensive cross-licensing agreement, said Zumtobel Group CEO Andreas Ludwig. As an innovation leader in lighting technology we will be continuing to invest in the expansion and exploitation of our existing patent portfolio. As we do so, we will be banking primarily on LED technology, the widespread marketing of which will receive major new impetus from the agreement now reached with Philips.
Rudy Provoost, Chief Executive Officer of Philips Lighting: LED lighting is transforming the lighting industry, enabling new and highly energy-efficient applications. By licensing our technology we are able to open up the full potential of new LED lighting solutions to companies and consumers, helping the solid-state lighting market to grow. I am therefore delighted that the Zumtobel Group supports our licensing program for solid-state lighting.

Philips unveils industry-changing lighting transformations
Tuesday, May 05, 2009
An unprecedented show of force at Lightfair 2009 unifies lighting competencies and delivers integrated solutions reflecting the new face of Philips Lighting
NEW YORK LIGHTFAIR INTERNATIONAL 2009 Philips today staked its claim as the worlds largest lighting solutions provider by introducing a wide range of new technologies, products and services that address both current and new uses of light. These innovations reflect a vastly expanded portfolio, the breadth of which is unique to the lighting industry. Ranging from components, electronics and fixtures to complete solid-state lighting systems with advanced controls, these latest introductions showcase Philips holistic, energy-efficient and high-quality approach to lighting.
Fueled by a series of valuable acquisitions, investment in green technologies and focus on the customer, Philips is expanding upon its bulb and fixture heritage to include broader integrated lighting solutions. These enable building owners and consumers alike to transform their spaces with light like never before be it for cost-saving purposes, energy efficiency or to customize their surroundings. A majority of todays buildings use dated lighting, lacking both the efficiency and transformative capabilities made possible by new technologies including light emitting diodes (LEDs) and higher-efficiency fluorescent systems.
In recent years Philips has made substantial investments to grow into the worlds largest integrated lighting solutions provider, bringing together all of the elements that help our customers use light in new and transformative ways, said Rudy Provoost, Chief Executive Officer, Philips Lighting.
Lighting is no longer a mere utility, it has been shown to affect the way we live, work and feel. Its also a considerable drain on our energy resources, accounting for 22% of electricity use in America. In todays economic climate its imperative that we assemble the right technologies and services for our customers to create experiences, inspire new applications, and mitigate strain on energy resources.
Lighting has taken center stage in recent months as the green design movement continues to gain momentum. This includes the U.S. administrations goal to improve new building efficiency by 50% and existing building efficiency by 25% over the next decade. In addition, the February stimulus package and recently-signed omnibus appropriations bill carved out a direct opportunity for lighting, the latter setting aside $25 million for LED-related research and development in 2009.
At Lightfair, Philips is showcasing the powerful range of its lighting solutions, made possible by innovations at every level of the lighting value chain. Highlights include:
Energy Services: A new comprehensive lighting audit and upgrade program in conjunction with strategic partners. This program guarantees economic payback, reduced carbon footprint and increased light quality for todays overwhelmingly inefficient buildings.
Professional Solid-State Lighting: Highly-efficient LED luminaires for wide-ranging interior and exterior uses leveraging the companys expanded in-house technology, expertise and intellectual property across all system layers.
Residential Solid-State Lighting: An advance preview of a forthcoming 600-lumen A-shape LED bulb that will effectively replace inefficient 40-watt incandescent alternatives.
Components: The industrys first power LED that offers specific lumens per watt efficacy, helping manufacturers develop energy-saving luminaires. The new high-performing modules have also been launched for downlight luminaires.
Professional Lamps: Advanced, higher-efficiency conventional lamps for outdoor, commercial, retail, and industrial use, including fluorescent and ceramic metal halide technology, which easily replace existing sources to deliver industry low wattage and significant cost savings.
Electronics: Optimized ballasts and LED drivers that provide enhanced energy efficiency and promote sustainability in integrated lighting systems, used in a range of outdoor, retail, sign, commercial and emergency applications.
