EXHIBIT 99.1
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., July 26, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Board of Directors of Westamerica Bancorporation (Nasdaq:WABC) today declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.37 per common share to shareholders of record at the close of business on August 6, 2012. The dividend is payable August 17, 2012.
Westamerica Bancorporation's Board of Directors also approved a plan to repurchase, as conditions warrant, up to two million shares of the Company's common stock on the open market or in privately negotiated transactions prior to September 1, 2013. The repurchase plan represents approximately 7 percent of the Company's common stock outstanding as of June 30, 2012.
"Westamerica's consistent dividend is provided from relatively high operating earnings," said Chairman, President, and CEO David Payne. "Renewal of the stock repurchase program provides flexibility in managing the Company's capital. Westamerica's strong capital position, high level of profitability, and stable credit quality support this new program."
On July 16, 2012, Westamerica reported $21.0 million in net income for the second quarter 2012, or $0.75 diluted earnings per common share. Second quarter 2012 return on average shareholders' equity was 15.6 percent.
Westamerica Bancorporation, through its wholly owned subsidiary Westamerica Bank, operates commercial banking offices throughout Northern and Central California. At June 30, 2012, the Company's assets totaled $5.0 billion.
