4. Inventories

Inventories are comprised of (in thousands):

Distribution costs associated with the sale of inventory are recorded as a component of selling, general and administrative expenses and were $9.0 million, $9.7 million, and $8.7 million in 2020, 2019 and 2018, respectively.
