In the second quarter of fiscal 2018, the Company determined that it was more likely than not that the carrying value of the Purification Solutions reporting unit exceeded its fair value. Accordingly, the Company performed the quantitative goodwill impairment test. Refer to Note E for details on the Purification Solutions goodwill impairment test and the resulting impairment charge recorded.

Intangible assets are amortized over their estimated useful lives, which range between twelve and twenty-five years, with a weighted average amortization period of approximately nineteen years. Amortization expense for the three month periods ended March 31, 2018 and 2017 was $3 million and $2 million, respectively, and is included in Cost of sales and Selling and administrative expenses in the Consolidated Statements of Operations. Amortization expense for the six month periods ended March 31, 2018 and 2017 was $5 million and $4 million, respectively, and is included in Cost of sales and Selling and administrative expenses in the Consolidated Statements of Operations. Total amortization expense is estimated to be approximately $6 million each year for the next five fiscal years.
