COMMITMENTS AND CONTINGENCIES
14. COMMITMENTS AND CONTINGENCIES
In the normal course of business, the Company and its subsidiaries may be involved in various claims, legal proceedings, or may enter into contracts that contain a variety of representations and warranties and which provide general indemnifications. Within our offshore energy business, a lessee did not fulfill its obligation under its charter arrangement, therefore we are pursuing rights afforded to us under the charter and the range of potential losses against the obligation is $0.0 million to $3.3 million. Our maximum exposure under other arrangements is unknown as no additional claims have been made. We believe the risk of loss in connection with such arrangements is remote.
The Company has contingent obligations under ASC 460, Guarantees, in connection with certain sales of aircraft on lease. Under the agreements, we provide certain guarantees at the end of the lease term for the condition of the aircraft engines that were sold to the buyer. The guarantees are valued at $6.7 million and $3.8 million as of June 30, 2023 and December 31, 2022, respectively, and are reflected as a component of Other liabilities on the Consolidated Balance Sheets.
Given variability in the condition of the engines at the end of the lease terms, which range from 4 to 10 years, the maximum potential amount of undiscounted future payments that could be required under the guarantees at June 30, 2023 was $34.7 million, which is not reasonably expected.
