Non-GAAP Financial Measures: In addition to reporting financial results in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”), the Company has presented EBITDA for 2016-2018 and for 2014-2015, adjusted net income and adjusted EBITDA. The Company defines EBITDA as net income before interest expense, provision for income tax, and depreciation and amortization, and defines adjusted EBITDA as EBITDA as further adjusted to exclude store closure and exit costs, gains and losses from disposal of assets, expenses incurred by the Company in its secondary public offerings and employment taxes paid by the Company in connection with options exercised in those offerings (“Public Offering Expenses”) and the loss on extinguishment of debt (collectively, the “Adjustments”). The Company defines adjusted net income as net income excluding the Adjustments and the related tax impact of those Adjustments. For fiscal years 2016, 2017 and 2018 to date, such further Adjustments to net income and EBITDA were immaterial; thus only net income and EBITDA are presented. The Company also provides information regarding Return on Invested Capital (“ROIC”) as additional information about its operating results for 2014-2018. ROIC is a non-GAAP financial measure used by management to evaluate the Company’s investment returns on capital and provides a meaningful measure of the effectiveness of its capital allocation over time. The Company defines ROIC as net operating profit after tax (“NOPAT”), including the effect of capitalized operating leases, divided by average invested capital. In addition, the Company presents diluted earnings per share for fiscal year 2017 excluding the one-time benefit of the legislation commonly referred to as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (the “Tax Act”). These non-GAAP measures are intended to provide additional information only and do not have any standard meanings prescribed by GAAP.
