FreeSeas Files Registration Statement to Provide Additional Financing Flexibility

PIRAEUS, Greece, Oct. 23, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FreeSeas Inc. (Nasdaq:FREE) (Nasdaq:FREEW) (Nasdaq:FREEZ) ("FreeSeas" or the "Company"), a transporter of drybulk cargoes through the ownership and operation of a fleet of eight Handysize and two Handymax vessels, announced today that it has filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC").

This registration statement will provide the Company with additional flexibility to raise capital, depending on favorable market conditions. This flexibility is currently limited under its previously filed shelf registration statement. The raising of equity capital would provide the Company with additional financing capability for the acquisition of vessels, the repayment of debt and general working capital purposes.

This registration statement relating to these securities has been filed with the SEC but has not yet become effective. These securities may not be sold nor may offers to buy be accepted prior to the time the registration statement becomes effective. This press release shall not constitute an offer to sell or the solicitation of an offer to buy nor shall there be any sale of these securities in any state in which such offer, solicitation or sale would be unlawful prior to registration or qualification under the securities laws of any such state.

A copy of the prospectus included in the registration statement may be obtained on the SEC's website at www.sec.gov. The information on FreeSeas' website is not a part of the registration statement or the prospectus included therein.
