CubeSmart offers customers the option to opt into our “Plant a Tree” program. Since 2010, ~175,000 trees have been planted in reforestation projects, restoring approximately 875 acres. In 2020 we upgraded 1,388 HVAC units across 209 stores, reducing carbon emissions by over 719k CO2e/lb, bringing us to 356 total stores with upgraded systems. The paperless lease process, followed by the rollout of our contactless rental program SmartRental, has reduced paper consumption by 44% and toner usage by 53% per store compared to 2013. Since 2016, CubeSmart has completed 83 solar projects at owned stores which generated 6.6 million kWh of power in 2020. Since 2010, CubeSmart has installed 86 energy management systems at owned stores to monitor and automate a store’s interior temperature and timing of energy usage. Since 2015, CubeSmart has completed lighting retrofits at 257 owned stores in 21 states and DC. Last year we upgraded over 4,000 lighting fixtures saving an estimated 2.9 million kWh.
