9. Segment Information

The Company operates in one reportable segment and is engaged in the development, manufacture and supply of critical subsystems and systems for the semiconductor capital equipment, flat panel, medical, energy and research industries. Multiple operating segments were aggregated into one reportable segment as the nature of the Company’s products and production processes, as well as type of customers and distribution methods, is consistent among all the Company’s products. In addition, all operating segments have similar economic characteristics. The Company’s foreign operations are conducted primarily through its wholly-owned subsidiary in China. The Company’s principal markets include North America, Asia and, to a lesser degree, Europe. Sales by geographic area represent sales to unaffiliated customers.

All information on sales by geographic area is based upon the location to which the products were shipped. The following table sets forth revenue by geographic area (in thousands):

At September 27, 2013 and September 28, 2012, approximately $4.5 million and $4.2 million, respectively, of the Company’s net long-lived assets were located in Asia, and the remaining balances were located in the United States.
