The tables above present unrecognized gains and losses on held-to-maturity securities since date of designation.

The fair value and amortized cost of debt securities at June 30, 2019, by contractual maturity, is shown below.  Expected maturities will differ from contractual maturities because issuers may have the right to call or prepay obligations with or without call or prepayment penalties. Securities not due at a single maturity date, primarily mortgage-backed securities, are shown separately.

The tables above present unrealized losses on held-to-maturity securities since the date of purchase, independent of the impact associated with changes in cost basis upon transfer from the available-for-sale designation to the held-to-maturity designation. As of June 30, 2019, the Company held 24 available-for-sale securities and 188 held-to-maturity securities in an unrealized loss position.

Unrealized losses on securities have not been recognized into income because the security issuers are of high credit quality, management does not intend to sell and it is more likely than not that the Company will not be required to sell the securities prior to their anticipated recovery and the decline in fair value is largely due to changes in interest rates.  The fair value is expected to recover as the securities approach maturity.

There were no proceeds from sales of available-for-sale securities during the six months ended June 30, 2019 or 2018.
