All of our marketable securities were classified as available-for-sale securities as of December 31, 2015, 2014 and 2013. Available-for-sale securities consist of the following (in thousands):

During the years ended December 31, 2015 and 2013, available-for-sale securities were sold for total proceeds of $496,000 and $747,000, respectively. The gross realized gains and losses on these sales totaled $44,000 and $0, respectively, in 2015, and $44,000 and $3,000, respectively, in 2013. During the year ended December 31, 2014, no available-for-sale securities were sold. For the purpose of determining gross realized gains and losses, the cost of securities sold is based on specific identification. A net unrealized holding loss on available-for-sale securities in the amount of $219,000 and $133,000 for the years ended December 31, 2015 and 2014, respectively, has been included in accumulated other comprehensive income.
