Stock-Based Compensation Stock-Based Compensation
The Company accounts for stock-based compensation pursuant to relevant authoritative guidance, which requires measurement of compensation cost for all stock awards at fair value on the date of grant and recognition of compensation, net of estimated forfeitures, over the requisite service period for awards expected to vest.
The Company has a Stock Incentive Plan (the "Plan"), pursuant to which the Company's board of directors is permitted to grant equity to employees and directors. Under the Plan, a maximum of 20.65 million shares of our common stock is approved to be issued for grants of restricted stock and stock options. At December 31, 2022, there were 4.6 million shares available to be granted under the Plan. The Company does not issue shares from treasury stock under the Plan.
The table below summarizes the expense recognized within general and administrative expenses in the Consolidated Statements of Income related to stock-based compensation for the years ended December 31 (in thousands):

The tax benefits recorded upon the exercises of options and vesting of restricted stock were $25.5 million, $32.8 million and $70.6 million for the years ended December 31, 2022, 2021 and 2020, respectively.

The aggregate intrinsic value of stock options exercisable at December 31, 2022 was $113.6 million. The weighted average remaining contractual term of options exercisable at December 31, 2022 was 3.4 years.

The fair value of stock options granted with market based vesting conditions was estimated using the Monte Carlo simulation valuation model with the following assumptions during the year ended December 31 as follows. There were no performance options granted with market based vesting conditions in 2022 or 2020.
