On September 18, 2008, Progress Energy, Inc. (the “Company”) announced that James B. Hyler, Jr., has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Company.
 
There is no arrangement or understanding between Mr. Hyler and any other person(s) pursuant to which he was selected to serve as a director.  Mr. Hyler was appointed to the following Committees of the Company’s Board of Directors: Audit and Corporate Performance and Finance.  During 2007, Mr. Hyler had no material interest in any transactions to which the Company or any of its subsidiaries was a party, and there are no currently proposed transactions involving the Company or any of its subsidiaries in which he has or will have a material interest.
