11. DISCONTINUED OPERATIONS

The Company recorded $4.3 million in after-tax income from discontinued operations for the nine month period ended September 30, 2016 primarily as a result of payments received from settlement agreements with insurers, as well as with Crane Co., in connection with the declaratory action filed in the United States District court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The Company recorded a loss of $3.1 million for the nine month period ended September 30, 2015 due to environmental and related legal expenses.
